Follow us on social media and keep updated on what's to come!

It’s time to wake up!

2022 is already reality and we’re approaching April in big steps. As it will take place for the very first time in beautiful Ticino, the organising committee wants this experience to be special in many ways for everyone.

“Consciousness is awareness of oneself (or one’s own cognitive experience) and the environment.” – William James, The Principles of Psychology

This is one of many ways to define consciousness. As already announced, we would like to give you insights in different aspects of this topic. - “Have you ever been in a critical situation where you had to make an ethically difficult decision? Or do you know how to react if a patient gets unconscious in the emergency department?” - Ethics and emergency medicine are among the topics that we’re looking forward to discussing with you in spring.

More details will follow soon!

Deadline prolonged: Master thesis in collaboration with the AK/CoFo

Capacity Building

Capacity Building: IFMSA Train New Trainers event in Sweden review (November 2021)

At the end of November I had the chance to participate at the first TNT (train new trainers) event of IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' associations) since the COVID-19 pandemic, which was held in Uppsala, Sweden. Capacity Building seeks to empower medical students in a variety of topics and teach them skills that are often excluded from the curriculum of medical schools in order to be able to teach these students what they need to graduate as trainers. During four days of workshops the 20 participants from all over Europe learnt about the principles of adult non-formal education and how to design training sessions. On the last days all participants had to deliver their first session on their own to graduate as official IFMSA trainers.

If you want to be informed about upcoming international events sign up for our mailing list.

Exchanges

Research Exchange in Kazan, July 2021

When I went to Kazan last summer I had no idea what to expect from Russia and its people. In fact I had never heard of this city before. I was quite surprised when I arrived and found out that there are not many English speakers in Russia, and the locals were very spontaneous, as in my first week of the exchange I was almost always on my own. But with time I met new students and I got very busy with exploring and enjoying the city.

Regarding the research part of my exchange I was rather disappointed for various reasons, for one we did not perform any kind of research as they were moving the lab and for another my tutor was a very bad English speaker. But I was able to tag along with the Professional exchange student and spend a lot of time at the hospital where I had a great time. So all in all I can really recommend Kazan for an exchange, although I advise you to choose a Clinical internship.

Presentation of a new swimsa candidate member: MEDIC

“MEDIC Lausanne (Medical Emergency & Disaster Introduction Courses) was created in September 2020 to promote emergency and disaster medicine in health studies. To achieve our aims, we organize multiple activities throughout the year.

Once per semester, the MEDIC weekend takes place, which includes 15 hours of training in emergency and disaster medicine spread over 2 days. The theoretical part is provided by experienced paramedics or emergency physicians. The practical part, with simulated patients for emergency clinical vignettes, is supervised by a group of experts composed only of residents with a strong interest in emergency medicine.

In addition, throughout the semester we organize various conferences and workshops, such as an introduction to terrorism, organization of pre-hospital emergency care, pediatric emergencies and many more. Moreover, we are delighted to have the opportunity to give “ABCDE” workshops at SMSC and to present our future projects to you!

Do not hesitate to follow us on social networks (@medic_lausanne), we are already looking forward to meeting you!

FluMed: Sewing FluMed’s first Frankenstein

FluMed conducted a sewing event for students from the Lucerne track last autumn. In groups of three the participants received sewing-tools to practice different sewing-techniques. In case they needed support, learning videos (via QR code) and written instructions were available at the sewing spots. After everybody had the opportunity to practice every sewing-technique, the groups held a competition on who could sew the scariest „fruit-monster” with what they had just practiced.

Since the amount of applications was near three times as high as expected (around 30% of all students from the Lucerne-Track participated) we had to rather spontaneously borrow much more sewing-material and create two one-hour-rotations. However, the popularity of this event motivated us to improve and conduct it again in the future. With the generous support from the swimsa fonds we were able to finance additional sewing-sets, so that participants can spend more time sewing and gain even more experiences next time!
