One month to create masterpiece
Writing contest open Jan. 3

It was a dark and stormy night! Nope!

Every parent’s worst nightmare! Not that either.

Those are two clichés journalists are told to avoid!

But there remain thousands of ways to fashion words that set the scene, evoke feelings, educate and more. And the Shuswap Association of Writers wants to read yours.

The Askew’s Word on the Lake Writing Contest opens tomorrow, Jan. 3. The contest is part of the Word on the Lake Writers’ Festival, which takes place at the beautiful Sorrento Centre from April 29 to May 1.

Submit your short fiction work of 1,200 to 1,500 words, nonfiction of 1,200 to 1,500 words, and or poetry consisting of up to three poems of one page each in length.

Prizes will be awarded to the top-three winners in all categories and their work will be included in this year’s Askew’s Word on the Lake Anthology.

Submissions by email will be accepted at contest.saow@gmail.com up to midnight Pacific time on Jan. 31, 2022. There is a $15 entry fee for each submission. For detailed information and instructions, go to wordonthelakewritersfestival.com and click on the Contest tab at the top of the page.

Early registration for this year’s festival designed for writers and readers is open from Feb. 12 to April 10.

As always, the selection committee has lined up a stellar cast of presenters: Gail Anderson-Dargatz, Kelley Armstrong, Anna Comfort O’Keefe, Norma Dunning, Scott Fitzgerald Gray, Anne Fleming, Kat Montagu, Ed Peekeekoot, Jacqueline Turner, Sam Wiebe and Ian Weir.

Learn more about these presenters in upcoming newsletters or catch up on everything at wordonthelakewritersfestival.com.

And all of us at the Shuswap Association of Writers wish all of you a happy and healthy 2022!
