Just when we were beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel we were hit with a curveball.  Once again the world is faced with a new wave of closures, testing, and booster shots.
-This isn’t the way we wanted to start the New Year!
I have empathy with you and your families as we struggle to keep our wits about us and ensure all precautions are put in place to get us through this new challenge.

Like many of you, my family's Christmas plans were canceled.  Faced with an overwhelming amount of food we packaged up the turkey and ham dinners, the desserts and candies, the presents and stockings and proceeded to make the rounds to our families.  Keeping our distance, we shouted our holiday wishes, serenaded them with Christmas Carols from the driveway, and returned home a little happier. We set up zoom calls and shared a drink of cheer with the family, promising that there will be a rain-check for Christmas celebrations at a safer time in the future.

So what’s the purpose/moral of my story?
I want everyone to know…..
  • that you are not alone,
  • that you can reach out to your fellow members (including me) if you need support,
  • that, like Toastmasters, we are very resilient and will weather this new storm, and
  • that there are definitely brighter days ahead.
On behalf of District 86…..Happy New Year to our astonishing members of District 86 and their families.

Congratulations, as of December 23rd, 2021, District 86 members have earned 673 educational awards, 65 Triple Crowns, completed 58 paths, and achieved 4 DTMs. Build on your 2021 activities and achievements to complete subsequent Pathway levels and achieve your Toastmasters goals.

Are you a Club Officer who is yet to attend Club Officer Training (COT)? In addition to the Leadership training, your Toastmaster club earns a Distinguished Club Point (DCP) when a minimum of 4 Club Officers attend training in Phase 1 and 2. - look at the article for the Club Officer Training and register  for your training

Congratulations, as of December 23rd, 2021, District 86 has 33 clubs with 5 or more Distinguished Club Points earned!  All clubs are encouraged to recognize member achievement by approving and submitting completed Pathway levels, and all Club Officers should attend Club Officer Training before February 28th, 2022.

Interested in strategies and best practices to help your club achieve Distinguished status by June 30, 2022, attend the Final Five on January 28, 2022.

Area Contests season is here! Have lots of fun cheering on and supporting members at your Area International Speech and Table Topics contests. See District 86 calendar for dates and times.

Speechcraft, Niagara-On-The-Lake Toastmasters, Charles Kennedy, DTM
Speechcraft can be a great way to build membership and push your club members to become better speakers, facilitators, and leaders. Niagara-On-The-Lake Toastmasters President Charles Kennedy, DTM has organized and co-facilitated 4 Speechcraft programs with his club and shared his insight on the personal reward of being a facilitator with their recent Fall 2021 6-week course.

“When we receive our DTM designation, many of us find ourselves at a crossroads."

After receiving my DTM, I wondered if I should stay or leave the organization; and if I continue my Toastmaster journey, what will I gain and what can I give back?

Our club, Niagara-On-The-Lake Toastmasters, conducts bi-annual Speechcraft workshops for a local Enterprise program for entrepreneurs. The participants are motivated and so grateful for the help they receive in crafting their best business pitch for a start-up grant. When they evaluated the 6-week course, they talked about the safe environment, the motivational feedback, and the positive energy. One participant was so nervous in the second session, she had to restart her ice-breaker speech 7 or 8 times. But that same woman blossomed right in front of our eyes and at the end of the workshop, she told us that she “was no longer afraid”. The joy and pride you’ll feel removing someone’s fear and helping them become a better version of themselves are difficult to describe. With that one short sentence, she helped me discover that what I give has value and what I gain is priceless.” (Charles Kennedy, DTM)

Speechcraft can be a rewarding experience for coordinators, participants & facilitators. Bringing new members to your club and at the same time growing yourself as a speaker and leader. For more information visit www.toastmasters.org/education/speechcraft.

Maybe it's time to buy your club some presents.

Many of our clubs have saved a lot of money since COVID started because they haven't had to pay any rent. Some clubs are wondering what to do with this extra money. My suggestion is that you enhance your club by buying some materials and equipment that you might not have had enough money to be able to buy in the past. I know that there are some fantastic supplies on the Toastmasters website that enhance the Toastmasters experience. I realize that many of our clubs are still meeting via zoom, but many clubs are also starting to prepare to meet in hybrid format, so my suggestion is that you go ahead and start buying some items to get ready for in-person meetings.

At our club, we have purchased a couple of new items. We have bought a new conference camera system my Logitech that will enhance our hybrid experience. I'll let you figure out what camera makes the most sense for your club, but there's a good chance that you will need one and I recommend you buy a good quality camera and microphone system. Another thing that we have purchased recently is a new lectern to replace our old one, some new ribbons, and executive pins for our members.  We have also invested in the new pathways pins with their corresponding level attachments that go with each pin, so anytime someone starts a new path or gains a new level we can award them with a new pin and the level attachments that go along with the pins.

I've been to small clubs, and I've been to large clubs and one thing I like about the large clubs is that they have the funds to buy the little extras like ribbons and pins. One would think it wouldn't matter, but I think most toastmasters like getting awards for the work that they put in to enhance their skills and abilities.

Cont'd, Alignment

Have you ever wondered why and how the District map is determined?
Do you feel that it is some mysterious random process?
The mystery is solved!
District Alignment is determined by a committee, which includes the Division Directors and a chair.
Points considered are as follows but not limited to
  • Geography
  • Number of clubs and areas already present
  • Logistical challenges
  • Member/Club needs
  • Area director workload
  • History
The goal is a balanced distribution of resources and talent ensuring robust member support and opportunities to grow within each Area and Division
Every year members scratch their heads as to why certain changes are made, now is the time for you to participate in this process.
Think about the needs of your club and area; send your thoughts to your area and division directors or directly to the alignment chair (alignment@toastmasters86.org ).
This process will be active until January 31/22.  Don’t wait! Provide your input now, be part of a positive Alignment.

Learn how to use media releases to boost your club’s community profile

Enrich your public relations confidence by sharing media releases that boost your club’s profile.

It’s true that local media isn’t what it used to be, but it’s still a valuable place to share your club information.  So are your social media channels.  And your club website.

If you have news about local people winning awards or using their Toastmasters skills to help community organizations, write a news release.  Then share the information with local newspapers, radio stations, bloggers, online news websites, and television stations.  They may not be able to always run a story, but they most likely always want to hear your news tip and decide for themselves.

Learn how to craft and share club new releases during a Friday Night Live with the PRM over Zoom on Fri., Jan. 14, 2022.

Here’s the Eventbrite link to register: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/friday-night-live-with-the-prm-tickets-231932846387

Roger Caesar, Newsletter info

In just 10 years, Toastmasters helped Brampton’s Roger Caesar grow from a business owner wanting to improve his communications skills to placing third in the World Championship of Public Speaking.

The year 2021 marked the fourth time Caesar competed in the annual event at the Toastmasters International Convention — and it was his best showing so far.

Here’s is a link to his third-place speech “Is It in You?” https://youtu.be/pIT_Nhao53M

Caesar owns Caesar Transport Inc. in Brampton, which recently celebrated 30 years in business.  He joined Brampton Toastmasters in February 2011. He felt he needed to develop his communication skills when interacting with executives.

He co-founded the Raising Champions Advanced Toastmasters club, helping members practice and master their speaking and leadership skills. He is also a motivational speaker who helps others develop their speaking skills and maximize their greatness.

Caesar gives back to this community, with donations to Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto and Knights Table in Brampton. He is a big contributor to youth leadership and gavel club programs.

As a hands-on business owner, he watched poor communication habits flourish as the pandemic pushed people online since March 2021. As a speech coach, he counsels clients to focus on pandemic communication tactics that work online — and in person.

“Zoom is a great way to communicate with people around the world, but it’s also made it easy for us to become lazy and not stay fully connected with people.  It’s so easy to click off the camera in a meeting and focus on something else,” Caesar says.

Dress up for your online meeting as if you were meeting in person, he says.  Wearing pajama bottoms doesn’t support the positive, attentive mindset that empowers effective communication.   Leave your camera on in virtual meetings and practice offering empathetic attention to stressed co-workers.
