JANUARY 2022 NEWSLETTER

Happy New Year!

We are back after the holidays with new exhibitions, learning opportunities, planetarium screenings and more. Our January newsletter has the scoop on everything happening at the museum this month. Be sure to read through so you don't miss a thing!

One World, One Sky Premiere

Sesame Street + Planetarium = FUN!

Adults $5 | Children 4-15 $3 | Members and children 3 and under free

Elmo and Big Bird live in the United States and Hu Hu Zhu lives far away in China, but they discovered that they still see the same stars at night! The word for star in Chinese is “xīng xing” (pronounced sing sing). How many “xīng xing” do you see in this sky?

We're rolling out the red carpet for Big Bird, Elmo and all their friends for a family-friendly opening night celebrating the first ever Roswell screening of ONE WORLD, ONE SKY! Free popcorn, photobooth and giveaways! Doors open at 6:30, film showing at 7 (approximately 30 minutes) followed by winner announcements; photobooth will be available till 8 p.m.

Buy Advance Tickets
Advance tickets can also be purchased at the museum front desk and will be available at the door the night of the event.

Second Saturdays

I see a pattern developing...

Saturday, January 8
Free All-Ages Art Activities 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Free Planetarium Screening of ONE WORLD, ONE SKY at 11 a.m.
Free museum admission for Roswell residents 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Come play with stamp-based printing, no fancy equipment required. Leave with a unique piece of fabric, designed by... you! Use our stamps or try your hand at making one of your own. We'll provide a foam block to carve, ink, one piece of fabric for each artist and some paper to practice on. See finished pieces and take home a materials list and instructions, so you can try it later too. Perfect for items like tea towels, curtains, t-shirts, pillows, canvas bags and more!

Second Saturdays are generously supported by the RMAC Foundation.

Call for Teaching Artists and Volunteers

Education programs are gearing up for 2022!

We have some great programs in the works and would like to bring in some new faces and ideas to enhance our offerings. There are a variety of options to become involved in our learning community. See the following list or propose your own:
  • Arts and crafts teachers (all media considered)
  • Adults, children or a mix
  • Weekends/weekdays, Second Saturdays, after school, Tuesday or Thursday evenings
  • Can be short workshops, weekly meetings, camps (spring/summer vacation)
All ideas considered, class and materials development assistance available. Pay is per contact hour. Choose the age range you are comfortable with, days/times available and length of commitment. We are also seeking volunteers to help out at Second Saturdays and other educational events. Please share with your network, even individuals outside Roswell. For more information, contact Jessica Parham, Museum Educator at 575-500-0352 or j.parham@roswell-nm.gov.

No RSVP required

On select Sundays at 2 pm, come by the RMAC for an all-levels gentle yoga class in the galleries. Sessions are taught by 200-hour certified instructor Alice Buck.

Upcoming Exhibition

Relocations
Work by Roswell Artist-in-Residence Marie Alarcón

January 15 – February 27, 2022
Artist Lecture and Opening Reception: Friday, January 14, 5:30 - 7 p.m.
Members and children 15 and under free | Non-members welcome with price of admission

Alarcón's work draws on personal and communal experiences of place and its production and the speculative cultural memory of displacement and diaspora. Working with light and shadow, reflection and projection, their materials consist of detritus, with industrial domestic materials treated as textiles, and videos that blur the distinction between the dream and the document. Learn more »

New Exhibitions

Barbara Latham: Lifetime Artist

December 2021 – Summer 2022
Donald B. Anderson Gallery

Pictorial artist and illustrator Barbara Latham (1896-1989) was a Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) 1967-1968. Latham and her husband, fellow artist Howard Cook, helped create what became the RAiR program that continues to this day. The 20 works from the Roswell Museum’s collection displayed here represent only a small amount of output by an artist who spent her entire life employing her artistic skills in documenting the people, places, and things she encountered. Read more »

Michele Borque Sewards: Flora & Fauna

December 2021 – Summer 2022
Entry Gallery

Pictorial artist Michele Bourque Sewards was a Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) 1973-1974. Many of the works featured in this exhibition were created during that time. Bourque Sewards credits her experience in the RAiR program as a major catalyst in her artistic career, opening doors to further opportunities she would not have had without her Roswell residency. Read more »
