This statewide essay contest explores the important and varied influencers in the lives and education of children – from the children’s perspective. Every day children are exposed to a variety of people and each one has an opportunity to influence the path a child decides to take. Whether it is someone that sparks an interest in a new topic, helps them work through a problem, shapes the kind of person they want to become by modeling behavior, simply listens to them, or any number of other actions, this is the platform for students to share their appreciation. The application deadline is March 1 each year.

Submissions must be submitted through the online form. Questions? Contact WSPTAEssay@wastatepta.org

From the Counseling Center

Semester 2 Schedules:
More information about schedule corrections for 2nd semester can be found here later in January 2022: https://www.everettsd.org/Page/9388.

Mid-year College Reports:
After 1st semester grades are posted (in mid-February), counselors will complete the Mid-Year report. This will pull students updated transcripts which will include 1st semester grades (don’t worry - the timing of this will work with the colleges to which seniors are applying!). Later this spring, when students know where they plan to attend, students will note that detail in Naviance. That notation will alert our Registrar where to send students final JHS transcript after they graduate in June.

Virtual Calming Room resource:
Another great resource we want to share with you is the Everett SD Virtual Calming Room. You can also find this link under QUICKLINKS on the JHS Counseling webpage. As we continue through this school year the counselors would like to offer you a place to go to find tools and strategies to manage stress, process emotions and take a moment to experience some calm. The Virtual Calming Room includes several resources for students of all ages and the adults in their lives.

NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse:
Juniors and seniors considering participating in intercollegiate athletics need to register online with the NCAA Clearinghouse. This registration certifies the eligibility of student athletes to participate in sports during their freshman year in college. Check out this link for more information: https://www.everettsd.org/Page/9404.

Good Citizenship Day
Good Citizenship Day is observed on January 14. On that day, social studies teachers coordinate a voter registration event in each history or social studies class attended by high school seniors. Students who will be eighteen years of age or older by the time of the next general election will be allowed to register to vote online in the classroom. Paper registration will also be made available in the classroom.

Registering to vote is easy. Visit the Snohomish County webpage for details on the three ways you can register to vote or update your registration. Students who are 16 & 17 years old can now pre-register to vote.

Land acknowledgement

In the district’s sustained work to build a culture of inclusive belonging for students, teachers, staff and the community, we join local, state, national and international efforts to acknowledge Native land.

According to the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, “In countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia, it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land.” Our Equity & Access Department encourages opening school and district events with this impactful Native land acknowledgment:

“We respectfully acknowledge that we gather today on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin, the San Juan Islands, and the North Cascades watershed since time immemorial. You are on Coast Salish Tribal Land.”
