More than two dozen people jumped to the rescue when 12 elk were found freezing to death in Ferry County near Spokane on Dec. 24. The elks had attempted to cross a frozen-over river but had fallen through the ice in the process and got trapped. The group faced dangerous circumstances during the rescue, using kayaks to wade out to the elk, attaching rope around their heads, and pulling them out with a winch attached to a Toyota 4Runner. (Yakima Herald) 🎤Bruce Harrell is Seattle’s new Mayor, but Jenny Durkan still has a few things to say. Listen to Durkan reflect on her tenure as our city’s mayor. She talks about the ways she oversaw the city before COVID (B.C.) and after COVID and sheds light on how her ideas around homelessness, policing, running for reelection, and more changed and played out throughout her term. Also in 2021, Washingtonians adapted, protested, celebrated, got vaccinated, graduated, created, danced, and so much more. 👉 (Crosscut) 🤝As temperatures got increasingly lower in December, the danger for unhoused individuals got higher, with limited city resources available to help our community experiencing homelessness. In response, several local mutual aid groups mobilized to provide help on the ground. Local groups and individuals rallied together to provide resources like clothing and other gear for cold weather, Narcan to treat narcotic overdoses, hot food, and more. (The Stranger) 🏫 School resumed this week for many kids, but not without major COVID testing for Seattle Public Schools students. The district offered rapid testing at more than a dozen locations over the course of Sunday and Monday, with school scheduled to resume today. Some students and parents waited for over three hours to take a test. The school district told parents in December to be ready for a possible shift to online following the holiday.
