Slovenia Study: Waste from research reactor and power plant could be cost-effectively disposed of in deep borehole

A preliminary study commissioned by the Slovenian Radioactive Waste Management Organisation (ARAO) in partnership with Deep Isolation finds that deep borehole disposal offers a safe and cost-effective solution for disposing of spent fuel from its TRIGA II research reactor. The research reactor, one of 66 of its kind worldwide, is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2043.

Of the options studied, the most cost-effective approach would be to build one deep borehole repository for fuel from both the TRIGA II reactor (pictured) and Slovenia’s Krško nuclear power plant.

A separate study by Deep Isolation published Dec. 14 by Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND) on behalf of the ERDO Association found that deep borehole disposal is a viable, cost-effective solution for all of the high-level and long-lived intermediate-level nuclear waste that’s being temporarily stored in Croatia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Slovenia.

EU to consider nuclear "clean" if there is a waste disposal solution

The Deep Isolation team is watching with interest the latest news surrounding the European Commission's efforts to recognize that nuclear (and natural gas) have a role to play in decarbonizing the European Union's economy.

The new regulation would set rules for: environmentally sustainable economic activities; demonstration units for advanced nuclear technologies; the construction of new nuclear power plants; and electricity generation from existing nuclear installations. The rules also require that waste and decommissioning funds be in place and that there must be operational facilities for the disposal of low and intermediate-level waste streams, with a plan for a high-level waste disposal facility to be operational by 2050.

This is good news for the environment. As we've shared in several blog posts, we believe nuclear energy is a low-carbon energy source that can help reduce emissions that lead to global warming and we think solving the waste problem helps remove public opposition to nuclear.

Deep Isolation expects this requirement will intensify existing strong interest in our solution from waste management and advanced reactor programs across the European Union.

Deep Isolation Blog: Helping the nuclear industry become more inclusionary

We sat down with Deep Isolation advisory board member Monica Mwanje for a Q&A about her efforts to help nuclear companies become more welcoming to minoritized groups.

John MatthewsMwanje, who got her start as a chemical engineer graduate student at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria, England, says the challenges she's faced throughout her career have inspired her to help others.

“Knowing what it’s like to feel and be excluded, seeing peers experiencing exclusion at times, too, and being frustrated by limited (sometimes non-existent) progress on the matters, inspired me to see what I can do to help improve experiences for others," Mwanje said.

EU Nuclear Waste Organizations Conclude Deep Borehole Disposal Great Option For Nuclear Waste

Deep Isolation recently completed two studies, one by the Slovenia Radioactive Waste Management Organisation (ARAO) and one by Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning, showing that deep boreholes could be a less expensive option for nuclear waste from Slovenia’s research reactor and spent fuel from a number of countries’ nuclear power programs.
