Happy New Year!

Welcome back!  There is no doubt that we were all looking forward to returning to in-person learning, and are perhaps feeling deflated by the announcement of the pivot to online classes. There have only been 7 school days of remote learning announced - we can do this! I will be making sure to provide opportunities for students to interact and have fun online and to feel a sense of connectedness and belonging. Student well-being is my priority!

In order to help these days of online school smoothly for your child, please review the information below, in addition to the emails sent out by Mrs. O'Toole. 

  1. Today, please have your child login into our Google Classroom. This will allow students to read a message from me welcoming them back while also ensuring that they can access Google Classroom and are ready for school tomorrow morning. If students are having technical issues, they should check that they are logged in to their device with their TDSB username and password and NOT a personal account.
     
  2. If your child is experiencing tech trouble and cannot log-in to their TDSB account using their username and password... 
    We know how difficult it can be reaching out to the IT department in the TDSB. Therefore, tomorrow Mme Frew and Ms. Julian are running a Zoom session tomorrow morning starting at 8:30 am for families. This will be a drop in that will run until 9:30 am to provide support to any families.

  3. TIMETABLE
    Our school day starts at 9:00 am, with a window of time for students to join until 9:15. This window of time allows students time to chat and connect, ask questions, and preview the day's schedule so that our morning meeting can begin at 9:15 am. Please encourage your child to check the daily schedule posted in Google Classroom so that they are present for live meetings and able to complete their work in a timely manner. I am available to answer questions for students and support them in their learning. Resource support periods will continue with Mrs. Frew, and we will follow our regular timetable for specialty subjects. Students will have an independent work period (asynchronous) daily from 2:40-3:20 pm. Please see the timetable below for details.

Staying Engaged During Remote Learning


Our goal is to keep our students as connected and engaged as possible. Connection between staff and students is much stronger when we see each other. Please ensure your child’s camera is during instruction. If a child needs to take a break (e.g., washroom break) they would send a message in chat, turn off their camera, mute their mic and turn on their camera upon their return. 

I know that returning to remote learning is a juggling act for parents as you support your children with learning while continuing with your work duties. Please remember that if you have questions or concerns please email me, do not join our class lesson. Please do not sit beside your child while they are online. It is important that if they have questions, they ask me. If they need support, they ask me. I understand you may be monitoring or checking, in but please encourage independence and avoid sitting with your child all day. The work that I assign is intended to be completed by the student without your assistance. If you feel your child is struggling with this, please let me know by email. 
I am looking forward to seeing students online tomorrow, and I know that whatever challenges lie ahead for all of us in room 214, we will tackle them together. Please reassure your children that when we meet online in the morning I will spend plenty of time answering questions and will be doing my very best to make this as positive experience for them.
