FIRST Robotics Competition
January 2022 Update

Greetings teams and Happy New Year!

It is understandable that Monday’s Provincial announcement regarding new gathering restrictions and shift to remote learning until January 17th has generated some questions about the upcoming FIRST Robotics Competition season in Ontario.

FIRST Canada can confirm that we are moving forward with kickoff and kit distribution in addition to executing a relatively normal district competitive event season and potential Offseason events. We understand that teams not being able to meet for the first 11 days of the season is a difficult challenge on top of other challenges presented by the pandemic. Uncertainty continues to exist as the pandemic evolves and restrictions change. Our plan is to do what is needed to ensure events run this season as long as it is safe to do so. Our COVID-19 protocols for this season are available and will be updated as we get closer to events. Ongoing collaboration with our host venue planning committees ensures that we will deliver safe experiences for our teams. If there are any event cancellations, details will be communicated as soon as we have them.

Regarding scheduled Kickoffs this Saturday, January 8th, please note that all kickoffs will now move to a “Drive Through Kit of Parts Pick up” format. All teams are asked to check emails for further information and communication from your local kickoff coordinators.

Kits will only be given to Lead Team Mentors and/or identified team members listed on the Surrogate form. Please make sure that you communicate this process with the person who will pick up your kit. It is important that team leads complete a surrogate form and submit this to firstroboticscompetition@firstinspires.org if your lead mentor is not picking up the robot. You can find all the latest information here on FIRST Canada 2022 FRC Season webpage.

We understand that some teams may find themselves in a position where they will not be able to compete this season in light of the aforementioned ongoing challenges. As per our policy, 100% of the Initial Registration Fee will be refunded if the refund request is submitted to FIRST Canada before the team receives the Kit of Parts (KOP). Due to the current extenuating circumstances with the shift to remote learning until January 17th, we have discussed with FIRST HQ and they have approved us extending the deadline to pick up your KOP, and thereby the refund deadline, until January 18th. A Lead team mentor must send an email refund request by January 18 to john.hobbins@firstroboticscanada.org.  After you have received your KOP, Initial Registration Fees will not be refunded under any other circumstances, even if the FIRST Robotics Competition season is canceled, in whole or in part. Teams who do not pick up their KOP will be contacted as a response will be required to confirm your team registration by 9pm on January 18. To accommodate this extension, we will be offering KOP pick up dates on both January 8th and January 18th.

With the minimum event size for single day events being 14, FIRST Canada may be in a position to consider cancelling or consolidating certain events if any of the final registration counts after January 18th are below this minimum size. All teams who commit and pick up their kit on January 8th, will be given priority if any event reassignments are necessary.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to a FIRST Canada staff member for additional assistance.
