On 3 January 2012, Spectrum reported on a new mouse model of Rett syndrome with a mutation in the MECP2 gene that mimics one seen in people. Compared with mice missing the gene altogether, the animals had more subtle differences in motor skills and brain connectivity. Since then, researchers pursuing gene therapies have tried to adjust MECP2 protein levels by altering mRNA or microRNA molecules.
