Welcome to Wednesday.

It’s a new year and we’re not ones to sit back and watch it pass us by, so let’s get right to it starting with our must-dos on our 2022 Seattle bucket list.

Whether you’re in search of a new adventure, a must-eat dish, a grand destination, or ways to build community, we have you covered. Thanks to your suggestions, and a few of our own, you’re now ready to take Seattle by storm, starting with a hot tub float down Lake Union!

🛥️ Take a hot tub boat through Lake Union —Joey E. Soak in the Seattle views while soaking in a toasty tub at 104 degrees, complete with Bluetooth speakers and plenty of room for snacks and drinks.

🚶Do the Seattle Underground Tour. Take a walking tour around Pioneer square and in the interconnecting tunnels below ground to learn all about the origins of our city.

🛍️ Volunteer at a nonprofit and support small businesses, especially BIPOC/women-owned (like these recommended by South Seattle Emerald). —Sarina R.

🚲 Bike to Mercer Island! —Karly H. Follow the Mercer Island Route and ride the 16.5-mile loop, offering views of Lake Washington, Bellevue, and Seattle.

🍽️ Visit more restaurant pop-ups. Seattle has an amazing food scene, made even more so by the many “moveable feasts” that pop up at restaurants all over the city.

🐊 See a show at the new Crocodile. The newly updated Crocodile in Belltown boasts a hotel, multiple venues, and two restaurant bars. Check out their events calendar here. Shoutout to @petitepowerhousejadey  for the suggestion.

What Seattle is Talking About

🎤 It’s Bruce Harrell’s turn to tell us about his term as Seattle Mayor. Yesterday, we shared a KNKX interview with former mayor Jenny Durkan, but this time around they’re talking to our new mayor about his plans for Seattle. Harrell faces similar challenges to Durkan, beginning his tenure at the beginning of a surge of COVID-19 cases. He also discusses his plans to address homelessness and the future of policing. (KNKX)

🚁 Snoqualmie Falls sees between 1.5 to 2 million visitors every year, but the increased recreation in the area has come at the cost of the Snoqualmie Tribe’s ancestral land. The Tribe considers this land sacred, but the noise from helicopter tours is especially threatening and disruptive to this hallowed space. The Snoqualmie Tribe is asking for the public’s support as they file an FAA complaint about the unregulated airspace area above Snoqualmie Falls. (Crosscut)

🏥 Who knew you could save a life from the stands of a hockey game? The Kraken and Vancouver Canucks are giving Nadia Popovici $10,000 for her tuition at medical school after she spotted a cancerous mole on the neck of the Canucks’ assistant equipment manager during a game. She knocked on the glass and held out a message on her phone telling him that he should see a doctor — and she was right. (King5)

One more thing…

Some Seattle-area COVID-19 testing sites reached positivity rates of nearly 50 percent as of Thursday, Dec. 30. Crunching the numbers in layman’s terms, this means that one in two people who tested for COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to Dec. 30 have received a positive result. It’s important to know what to expect if you test positive, so we want to share a few resources that can help you in case of a positive result:

✍️ These new recommendations from Washington’s Department of Health can help you lay out a plan for what to do if you test positive, and how to stay safe.

😷 When it comes to masks, an N95 or KN95 mask will protect you best. However, if you can’t get your hands on one right now, Washington state epidemiologist Dr. Scott Lindquist has some tips for how to mask up in this video

📰 This article from The Stranger will tell you all about the information you read above, but with more context for the decisions made and a little laughter to lighten the load.

Thanks for tuning in, everyone! Stay safe, and we’ll see you tomorrow 😎
