Changes We Hope Outlast the Pandemic

If you had asked me in February 2020 what Zoom was, I could not have told you. Now “shall we do a Zoom” is a phrase I have said many, many times since March 23, 2020, when Dallas County issued the stay-at-home order.
There are many things to dislike about the COVID-19 pandemic, and the world will be a better place when the virus stops disrupting our lives. But I must admit that COVID has created opportunities that many of us never truly considered before we had no choice. Working from home, for example, wasn’t an option for most people. But now, it’s likely to be a part of the workplace for years to come.
Although many legal practices saw a decrease in the last two years, the pandemic caused so much stress on families that family lawyers are busier than ever. Fortunately, technology allowed us to continue serving our clients even when we couldn’t be face-to-face. In fact, COVID did nothing less than transform the way I work and communicate with my clients, and much of it is for the better — both for my clients’ pocketbooks and for my ability to get more done every day.
Video Conferences Aren’t Going Away (I Hope)
The Texas Supreme Court laid the groundwork for our ability to serve our clients remotely several years ago, when the court implemented electronic filing in all of Texas’ 254 counties. Had they not done that, our courts system would have been at a near standstill when COVID hit.
Thankfully, several North Texas courts quickly converted to conducting hearings and final bench trials on Zoom. Soon we were conducting client meetings, mediations, and bar association and other civic organization meetings via video conferencing as well.
Of course, networking and social events are more fun in person, but I hope we can continue to hold business meetings (especially bar association and committee meetings) via Zoom.
All things being equal, I prefer to meet with clients in person. But, if meeting over Zoom helps the client manage their lives, then let’s meet over Zoom.
