A Quick Update 2021

As the new year starts, we want to keep you informed about our work and your support in helping us make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The year has been good to us. We have launched a number of new projects – all of which are going well.

The Center on Business and Poverty has become a leader in applying market-based solutions to improve low and moderate-income families’ financial situations. Our strategy is to act as an implementer and advisor for employers to enhance the long-term economic stability and well-being of their low-income employees.

Over the last few years we have worked in 37 states and have focused our international efforts on India, Sri Lanka and Mexico. In total, these projects will have, by the end of 2020, influenced the lives of more than a million employees, readers and entrepreneurs, plus their family members.

Since 2008, our free tax preparation programs, all in Wisconsin, have helped over 8000 individuals receive over $15,000,000 in tax refunds.

Cumulative milestones include:

HELPING START AND GROW COMPANIES – assisting 48 firms to start up and grow in U.S. inner cities and different parts of India, creating approximately 460 jobs.

HELPING STUDENTS - establishing internships for 3 students per year, and service opportunities for another 50 from various universities, helping them to learn and grow by writing and working on projects at large and small employers.

OFFERING ONLINE FINANCIAL LITERACY COURSES - helping leverage technology to improve financial well-being through ongoing financial literacy training. While we assisted more than a million employees and others from over 850 employers and through several newspapers over 15 years, we have changed our strategy. We are now focused on educating employee owners within their firms.Our old track record was impressive, as we worked with other employers, more than 300,000 employees have completed in excess of 800,000 hours of training. The research shows up to a 70% improvement in financial knowledge, attitudes and behavior equaling fewer late fees paid related to their credit cards, decreased debt, and less stress.We will keep you posted on how our new approach unfolds.

TRAINING MANAGERS - continuing a process of training managers of employee-owned companies. To date we have helped train over 700 managers in three-day classes.

CONVENING LEADERS - organizing conferences for over 600 participants who are interested in the types of themes we address.

We hope to accomplish more in 2022 and that you have a great year.

The 6th Annual Oxford Conference on Business and Poverty - Housing has been postponed until July 27-28, 2022.
