Gatehouse expansion plan and other news

February 2022

Gatehouse expansion plan (see January newsletter)
At 7pm on Thursday 3 February Camden is hearing the application by the proprietors of The Gatehouse to expand into 1 Hampstead Lane, the former restaurant.  The rear of 1 Hampstead Lane leads directly into the dining area and into the garden of The Gatehouse.  The former restaurant was a good size so The Gatehouse will become a large pub if this is granted.  Several residents have objected and will be attending the hearing by video.  The Highgate Society has also made representations. We want to see a successful business that contributes positively to Highgate. At the same time we know that pub gardens and external terraces can cause severe noise pollution for nearby residents and this needs to be managed through appropriate arrangements.  The meeting will take place on Microsoft Teams, and can be watched live via www.camden.gov.uk/webcast
Highgate Society objects to Murphy's Yard proposal

The Society believes that the massing and height of the six tower blocks of between 11 to 19 storeys proposed on the site south of Gordon House Road will have an overwhelming adverse impact on the openness of the Heath. For full details of the objections click here
French Circle: Soirée Saint-Valentin
Wednesday 2nd February  7.30 pm at 10A South Grove N6 6BS. Entry £7 0n the door.

The Cercle français is celebrating Valentine's day a little early on 2nd February.  All welcome to come to 10A  to chat in French and exchange French texts or music about LOVE!

We have a change of programme in March as our speaker cannot make it.  We will therefore swap the March and May events, which means that on 2nd March we will hold a "Soirée discussion", an opportunity to chat in French in pairs or small groups, prompted by cards you choose with leading questions on them.  We've done it before, it's very enjoyable and all are welcome, as usual.

Are our heritage letter boxes at risk?

Read this BBC report about the theft of historic post boxes for the collector market. If you live near one (this one is in Hampstead Lane) listen out for strange noises, especially at night, and if necessary call the police.
