THE ART MINOR, WHAT IS IT?
Are you loving your Art classes, but already have another major (or know someone who is in this boat)? The Art Minor is only (6) classes:
  • (1) Introductory Theory class (1001 or 1002)
  • (1) 3000-level Art History/Cultural Studies elective
  • (4) studio ARTS classes
Because you can re-take 3000-level classes for credit, you can minor in a single medium if you want: Photography, Moving Image, Digital Drawing, Ceramics, Sculpture, Drawing, Painting, or Printmaking. It’s also a great Interdisciplinary minor with classes in Art and Ecology, Sound Art, and Performance Art. Or, explore as much as you wish across media! Learn more about the full requirements. Email us to get the process started artdep@umn.edu.

SHOUT-OUTS
  • Gudrun Lock solo show at the Weisman Art Museum (Minneapolis)
The Nature Of Shoreham Yards is an installation envisioned by artist Gudrun Lock (BFA, MFA '07) on view in the Target Studio Gallery now – May 15, 2022. The exhibition features the in-process work, research, and explorations of a motley collective of thinkers and makers. The focus of these efforts are the buffers of an active 230-acre train and trucking facility in Northeast Minneapolis, called Shoreham Yards.

  • Josh Winkler in the McKnight Fellowship exhibit at Highpoint Editions (Minneapolis)
The Highpoint Editions | McKnight Printmaking Fellowship exhibition is on view now — February 12 and features Josh Winkler (MFA ‘10) and Gaylord Schanilec. Despite never having met prior to this fellowship, their work is remarkably congruous. Each artist is an admirer and advocate of the natural world, with a particular appreciation for trees. Not only do trees often inform the content of their work, but both artists have also historically used wood as their printing matrix of choice; woodcut for Josh and wood engraving for Gaylord.

Burnet Gallery's Winter Exhibition will be on view January 29 —  March 26 and includes work by staff Sonja Peterson (MFA ‘09), lecturer

  • Call for Submissions - Outreach through Science and Art (OSA) - DUE FEB 4
Do you have an interest in science and/or a passion for art? UMN student group Outreach through Science and Art (OSA) is hosting an exhibition of arts and crafts inspired by or related to science. Participation is open to all University of Minnesota students and we hope to align this event with the Student Research Symposium (SRS) organized by the departments of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Soil Water and Climate. Exhibition display dates are March 29 - April 1, 2022, with a gallery walk event during the SRS on April 1. The public display space in Tate Hall is not monitored.  All exhibiting artists need to agree that the University and exhibit organizers are not responsible for any lost or damaged art.  2D art may be displayed as “window clings” (printed images affixed to glass display windows). OSA is able to assist with high-resolution photography of 2D art for window clings and the online gallery. 3D art in the online gallery may be displayed as a single image, series of images, or 3D digital model. OSA is able to assist with 3D scanning of art. Submit your art using this form. Submissions are due at 11:59 PM on February 4, 2022. Questions? Please contact Jennifer Taylor (tayl1612@umn.edu).

This artist talk will discuss the iconic performance art piece from the 1970s, which is reimagined today with ICED BODIES. An ice cello dyed black and embedded with electronics is played by Seth Parker Woods and translated into sound by composer Spencer Topel, paying tribute to an avant-garde past while reflecting on the Black bodies lost to mental illness and violence in the African American community.
