A big step...

Dear reader,

I’m writing to you as a proud consul general. We announced our ScaleNL accelerator to help Dutch startups prepare for market entry in the United States. A growth program has been on our wish list for a long time.

This accelerator means a big step of our Holland in the Valley network, and I look forward to the great things the companies will do in the United States. I hope we can announce further steps later this year.

We also look back at a successful CES in Las Vegas, where the absence of big companies resulted in more attention for our startups and scale-ups. It was great to see the companies hustling at the convention, where they made many new connections and deals.

I hope to see you at the Ben Feringa Lecture 2022, presented by Dr. Beatrice de Graaf of Utrecht University.

Best, Dirk Janssen
Consul General

Business Updates - CES edition
Scale with ScaleNL
We have some big news to share. We’re starting a program for startups that want to grow and scale in the United States. In the next three years, the ScaleNL Accelerator will support up to 60 companies that will follow an intensive, 12-week coaching program to prepare them for success in the American market.

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy allocated €500,000 for this investment in the Dutch startup ecosystem. Invest-NL will also contribute financially to the program. For the programming, we work together with the other consulates general in the USA.

Wouter Bos, CEO of Invest-NL: “Fast-growing startups that can scale with innovative technology play an important role in accelerating transitions. With our support for the ScaleNL Accelerator, we help Dutch companies to scale up their activities at home and abroad and thus increase their chance of success.”

Accelerate the Change at CES 2022
70 companies, 2 pavilions, 13 innovation award winners, and hundreds of promising new contacts and mentions by the press. The Netherlands showcased tech for a responsible future at CES 2022 in Las Vegas

“The NL Tech Pavilion at CES 2022 includes two pavilions for the first time, which demonstrates and maps to the immense growth of the Netherlands tech ecosystem over the past several years,” said HRH Prince Constantijn Van Oranje-Nassau, Special Envoy to Techleapnl. “In order to solve the urgent challenges we face today, we need to design solutions for the world we will live in tomorrow. Our start-ups and scale-ups have answered the call to accelerate the change together.”

We want to thank all the companies that participated, in person in Vegas or virtually from the Netherlands. It was a strange, sometimes challenging edition, and we look forward hearing about your next steps.
Ben Feringa Lecture 2022 by Beatrice de Graaf
Join us for the Ben Feringa Lecture 2022 by Professor Beatrice de Graaf, organized by Holland in the Valley, Universities of The Netherlands and University of Groningen

In 2020, Nobel Laureate Ben Feringa presented the inaugural Ben Feringa Lecture. More than 1500 people tuned in virtually to listen to his story. Professor Feringa personally selected Beatrice de Graaf of Utrecht University to be his successor for the 2022 edition.

Beatrice de Graaf is a historian and a security & terrorism researcher. Her research focuses on how states and societies try to maintain high levels of security and how these attempts relate to core values and institutions (democracy, freedom, rule of law, constitutional and responsible government).

NL in 3D
For the Netherlands pavilion at CES, Dutch startup Aectual 3D printed an art display that visualizes themes as climate change, renewable energy, data security, innovation and the Dutch-American friendship. The screens are made from 100% recycled bioplastic from the Dutch EU Presidency building in 2016, and can be recycled and reprinted again into new architectural products in the future.
Out of hundreds of applications from Dutch students, Internships in the Valley has selected 97 top candidates for the matching process. The selection committee was blown away by the talent this year and is beyond excited to finally kick off. Matched candidates will eventually do an internship at a Silicon Valley-based company.
