AUSTRALIA DAY 2022

WALGETT SHIRE AUSTRALIA DAY 2022 AWARDS

A huge congratulations to the nominees and recipients of the Australia Day 2022 Awards.  This year’s Awards were planned to be celebrated at the Collarenebri Bowling Club.  However, due to changes in COVID guidelines around venue size and attendees, a change to an outdoor fun filled family day at the Walgett Pool was made; kick stating with an 8am breakfast provided by Walgett PCYC.  On the morning of the event Mother Nature had other plans delivering steady rainfall, the night before, hindering the morning proceedings. After much deliberation and ensuring we provided a COVID safe environment, abiding with COVID regulations, the 2022 Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony was held at the new multi-million dollar PCYC complex giving many of the community their first look inside the new facility.

The day began with Manager Community Development and MC for the event, Mr George McCormick, delivering a smooth transition to the new venue with the help of Council staff and community members.   This ensured all award recipients, nominees and distinguished guests arrive with plenty of time for a catered breakfast before the official preceding’s got underway.

Local Elder Doreen Peters conducted the Welcome to Country; acknowledging the people, Elders, Traditional Custodians and First People of the land, its waterways and the continuing spiritual connection to the land on which we were all meeting on.  Paying respects to the Elders past, present and future of the Gamilaroi nation. Mayor Jane Keir OAM then welcomed and introduced our Australia Day Ambassador for this year, renowned children’s author, Ms Susanne Gervay OAM.

The day witnessed over 150 plus Shire residents and some visitors engage in a well-received awards and citizenship ceremony.

This year Council had 19 nominations in the following categories: Health Award, Business Award, Volunteer of the Year, lifetime Achievement Award, Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of the Year.

COUNCIL

COMMUNITY FACILITIES TO RECEIVE A FACELIFT IN WALGETT
Two of the wonderful community facilities in the Walgett Shire Council area will be upgraded, thanks to almost $170,000 worth of funding from the NSW Government.
Of the funding, $72,822 has been allocated towards the fencing of playspace in Gray Park, as well as the replacement and enhancement of furniture in the park to make it more user-friendly for families and visitors.
The Norman 'Tracker' Walford Walkway, which is named after an amazing man, will receive $95,661 worth of upgrades, including resealing of the entire 712m path, an upgrade of signage and some additional seating.
GOLF CLUB AND SPORTING FIELD UPGRADE FOR 'THE RIDGE' 👍

You'll have to pardon the pun but Lightning Ridge is one of the gems of Western NSW, and it is great to announce funding for a pair of projects in the town through the Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Walgett Shire Council will receive a total of $174,153 for the projects, which will be split between the local sporting field ($84,153) and the Lightning Ridge Golf Club ($90,000).

At the golfy, the repair of water and termite damage to the club house roof, and the replacement of flooring, is a priority. There's also plans down the track to upgrade the greens and add a putt putt golf and/or driving range to increase community participation.

The sporting field project will see a white powder-coated picket fence added to the facility, which will improve the aesthetics and provide a wonderful facility for everyone.
FEMALE JOCKEY'S ROOM FOR COLLARENEBRI RACECOURSE
Some major works will be undertaken at Collarenebri Showground and Racecourse, including the addition of a dedicated change room for female jockeys.
More and more female riders are involved in the sport these days, and at some meetings the girls outnumber the guys in the riding ranks. As a result, there is a strong need for more facilities, particularly at a place like Collarenebri where, as you can see, the dust flies when the horses thunder around the track.
That's why it gives me pleasure to announce that Walgett Shire Council will receive $77, 168 from the Stronger Country Communities Fund towards the project, which will also include an upgrade of the existing office and amenities, including new flooring and painting.

CLAIM YOUR ALFRESCO DINING REBATE
Hospitality businesses across NSW can claim their $5000 Alfresco Restart Rebate next month.
More than 1,813 NSW businesses have already registered for the rebate, which is available to the first 5,000 eligible small or medium food and beverage businesses that register.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said: “Whether you’re a café in Western Sydney, a restaurant in a regional community or a pub on the coast, this is about providing businesses with more choice and convenience.”
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said: “The $25.5 million program will see the dreams of business owners of turning their courtyard into a café or expanding to serve a summer curbside chardonnay into a reality.
“Applying for the rebate can be done online and once the registration has been approved, businesses will be able to claim it through their Business Profile.”
Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Cities Rob Stokes said the funding was part of the NSW Government’s $66 million Alfresco Restart Package.
“We’ve removed the regulatory roadblocks, and now these grants will help outdoor dining flourish across the state with funds to make simple changes like better lighting or electrical connections,” Mr Stokes said.
Hospitality businesses can claim eligible expenses incurred from 14 October 2021 to 30 April 2022. Under the rebate, expenses such as temporary ground surfaces, traffic mitigation/ barriers, generators, installation of outdoor power points, weather protection for shade and rain, lighting, heaters, fans and misters, additional point of sale and more can be claimed.
Claims must be made by 30 April 2022.

New support payments for SMEs hit hard by Omicron
The NSW Government will cover up to 20 per cent of a small or medium business’s weekly payroll as part of a new package of measures to help those who have suffered a large cut to turnover during the Omicron wave.
The Small Business Support Program helps those businesses with annual turnover of between $75,000 and $50 million with a decline in turnover of at least 40 per cent.
The minimum payment will be $500 per week and the maximum $5,000 per week.
Applications are expected to open in mid February.
In addition, the existing Small Business Fees, Charges Rebate will be increased by 50% from the current $2,000 limit to $3,000 and employing businesses will be able to use the rebate to obtain Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs). This measure is designed to support worker availability by helping reduce costs to small businesses and enabling healthy staff who have been exposed to COVID-19, but test negative, to return to work.
RAT rebates are expected to be available from late March.

NSW GOVERNMENT PROVIDES LIFELINE
FOR MAJOR EVENTS & FESTIVALS
Major events and festivals that have been cancelled or significantly disrupted by COVID-19 Public Health Orders will be supported by funding through the NSW Government’s Event Saver Fund.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said: “Major events are a key economic driver that create thousands of jobs across the state. The Event Saver Fund will ensure that organisers aren’t left high and dry as we work through this latest phase of the pandemic and sends a strong signal that the Government is here to support business.”
Major event organisers will be able to pay suppliers, staff and recover other costs where an event is cancelled or significantly disrupted as a result of public health orders imposed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said: “As we look to rebound from the effects of the past two years, this funding will help support local jobs and ensure major event organisers can plan with confidence to safely deliver their events in 2022/23.”
Industry groups have welcomed the announcement. APRA AMCOS CEO Dean Ormston said the initiative was “an important first step in ensuring that the live music industry in NSW can survive this latest wave”.
The Australian Festivals Association chair Julia Robinson said the package was “really great for building confidence” and would help events recover some of the costs they have lost.

NEW NETBALL AND TENNIS COURTS FOR WALGETT 🏐
One of the great things about the Stronger Country Communities Fund is its ability to turn dreams into reality, and there is no better example of that than the Walgett Sporting Club.
The club has received $350,000 through round 4 of the SCCF and will use the money to install another netball court and upgrade four tennis courts to a high-quality standard.
Given the success of Ash Barty, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkanakis at the Australian Open, there's bound to be a lot more people keen for a hit over the coming weeks and months 👍
To quote the club's manager Natalie Thurston, these projects wouldn't have been able to happen for 15-20 years without this injection of much-needed funding 💵
As well as being great news for the club, it's great news for the town as management is hoping to use as many local tradies and suppliers as possible to do the work 😀
