Halftime in Haiti
January 2022

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

I've been working on this newsletter for three days in between naps--the latest Greek letter has hit the Christensens.  I guess we all hope that Omicron becomes "Omega"--the end of the pandemic.  God is in charge of these things.  Our role is to trust Him enough to obey Him in all things and leave the results in His hands.
Speaking of Greek, I'm continuing to teach our 70 Bible college students "Introduction to New Testament Greek" this trimester.  We've been "in person" since classes restarted in November.  The students are glad to learn this tool which will help them to better understand God's Word, and, in turn, better communicate it to others.

We are so grateful that our boys could visit their home over Christmas break!

A little story -- that coconut tree tipped over in the early 60's or even earlier.  Heather played on it in the '70's, as a little girl wearing cowboy boots.  This photo reenacts our family picture below from 2013.  I didn't hear the tree complain :)
The boys got to say their goodbyes to their childhood home and to their Haitian friends.  They are all back at CIU and doing well.

Last week we hit the halfway mark of our final six-month term in Haiti.  We want our "second half" go better than the Green Bay Packers' second half this past weekend!  Ugh!
We've started shipping personal items back to the U.S. via Agape Flights.  Heather found this sticker as she was packing Christmas decorations on the 13th anniversary of our arrival in Haiti.  That was surreal.
I'm sometimes asked what we will be doing for World Team once we return to the U.S.  Honestly, it is a developing story, but the simplest summary is:
  • Training church leaders in the Caribbean
  • Mentoring missionaries globally
  • Facilitating church plants to immigrants in North America
Heather is part of WT's "Child Safeguarding" team -- which fits her passion for the well-being of missionary kids.  Plus our proximity to CIU will present ongoing ministry opportunities to MKs and to students training for ministry.

We will still be full-time missionaries, requiring monthly missionary support--WT has supporters like you, no Bill Gates Foundation, to support this gospel work.
Erik was glad to introduce his girlfriend, Abigail, to Haiti.  His chronic fatigue has not subsided.  Pray for his energy and recovery.

Ian started seminary/graduate classes this month and he loves his classes and professors (his Hermeneutics prof was one of Sean's seminary classmates--yeah, feeling old).

Joey enjoys his Bible and Sports Management double major.  He's one of the campus socialites--he has friends from every group on campus.

Ellie is pushing through Covid, 10th grade and loneliness.  The internet keeps her connected with her friends, for which we are thankful.
Sean gave a workshop for ten Bible college professors last week on course preparation and how to write good exam questions.

The Bible School has a lot of projects going--I've been reluctant to mention them because our focus has been on earthquake recovery, but strong biblical formation and ministry training continues in vigor here!

1) The middle two professors, Peterson and David, are starting their doctoral programs. This is very important for our school and for the advancement of solid theological education in the southern peninsula of Haiti.  If you or your church would be interested in assisting them with the cost, let me know!

2) Once more earthquake-damaged parsonages have been rebuilt, we want to start building a second story to our classroom building.  With 100 current students and more waiting to enroll, the campus isn't big enough.  The project will include solarizing the school and it will allow us to offer better conference services for organizations who rent our facilities (sustainability!).
  • Pray for Heather as she also recovers from "omicron".  Her ladies' Bible study is going quite well.
  • Pray for Sean as he works on his writing projects in Creole and he will teach a special course in the remote town of Jeremie next month.
  • Pray for the new MEBSH executive committee that will be installed next month--many are former students of Sean's; others are colleagues.  They have many challenges facing them!
  • Pray for new missionaries to bring the Gospel of Christ where it is not yet preached and the Church where it is not yet assembled.

With love and gratitude,

Sean, Heather, Ian, Erik, Joey and Ellie Christensen
