The Addressing Racialization in Ballet Symposium begins this week!

Over the past several months, Canada's National Ballet School has been working alongside The Dance Institute of Washington and Lauri Fitz-Pegado to prepare the Addressing Racialization in Ballet Symposium. We are thrilled that this online symposium will kick off this Friday, convening lived experiences, areas of expertise and innovative ideas from a diverse range of more than 40 multi-generational speakers, panelists and facilitators from Canada and the United States, representing many facets of the arts sector, including administration, performance, instruction, education, and consulting.

The symposium will engage in meaningful and solutions-oriented discussions of racialization in ballet, with a focus on three pillars that support the credible pursuit and implementation of equity, diversity and inclusion: business success, subjectivity of ballet, and the ethical responsibility of the art form.

This symposium is ideal for arts administrators, dance teachers, artists, students and anyone passionate about equity work in the arts. Join us beginning this Friday and Saturday (January 28 and 29). The symposium will continue on February 4 and 5, with additional panels and speakers.

Click below to learn more about the speakers, panels, and to register. Please note that registration for this week's session will close at 11:59 pm EST on January 27.

Exciting updates about Ballet Unleashed's Switchback

We are delighted to share the trailer and poster for Ballet Unleashed’s first commissioned project, Switchback, a short film created by internationally renowned choreographer Cathy Marston and film director Lauren Finerman.

In response to an emerging landscape for current artists, Switchback offers a physical narrative portraying a dancer’s quest to chase their dreams.

The work was filmed over the summer of 2021 and features six graduates from four partner schools around the world (including two NBS students).

Visit Ballet Unleashed's website to stay tuned for information about opportunities to enjoy the film throughout 2022.
New campaign addresses stigma and raises awareness about the power of dance for people living with dementia

Too often, stereotypes and prejudices reduce the identities and experiences of people living with dementia to the diagnosis of dementia. Let’s challenge dementia-related stigma through dance.

Research on aging and brain health finds that dance offers a unique combination of physical, mental and social benefits for older adults. Dance may be socially and emotionally beneficial to older adults by reducing isolation and creating a sense of community and space for creativity and artistic expression.

Together, let's celebrate the creativity, joy, playfulness, community and connection of dancers living with dementia and their carers. Through a new Dancer Not Dementia campaign, we’ll be sharing information and experiences that highlight the power of dance for people living with dementia.

The campus of Canada’s National Ballet School sits upon the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and that the descendants of the first peoples who lived here are a vibrant and integral part of our society today. It is essential to pause and recognize that people lived on and cared for these lands for centuries before a ballet school stood on these grounds.
