OUR LOCAL NEWS

We have raised funds to buy a thermal imaging camera!

Better Derbyshire Dales Fund have given us £1,500 and Local Giving gave us £500 for buying a camera.

The meeting we organised in Middleton sadly did not have enough people booking, so we had to cancel it.

thermal cameraWe are now urgently looking for a few houses to survey so we can publicise a meeting soon, with some local examples to demonstrate what the camera can do.

If you are interested in having a survey done, please contact us as soon as possible on wirksworthtclt@gmail.com
or ring Mary Ann on 07792 121202.

HUG GRANTS

HUG stands for Home Upgrade Grants

Are you not connected to the gas grid and on a low income? And does your house have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D or lower? If so, no doubt you are worried about escalating fuel prices!

You could be entitled to a grant for free wall and cold penguinroof insulation and a free replacement heating system. If you are in this situation contact Derbyshire Dales District Council Customer Services on 01629 761 100. If you know someone likely to be in this situation, please give them this information. (Other grants are in the pipeline.)

GREEN HYDROGEN FOR HEATING?

Don't wait for hydrogen to replace gas in your boiler!

Green hydrogen (made from non-fossil fuels) is set to increase markedly in the next few years. It is talked about as a replacement for gas in existing gas boilers. Beware.

H2Priority end uses for low-carbon hydrogen are defined as sectors where electrification is challenging and hydrogen-fired tech is rapidly becoming mature. Refineries is the top priority, followed by international shipping and steelmaking. Long-haul aviation, high-temperature heating, long-haul trucks, ferries and trains also fall into the high-priority category.

REDUCING RIVER POLLUTION

Reduce the sewage!

Our water companies regularly dump raw sewage in rivers and say they have no alternative when it rains heavily - rainfall mixed with waste water from households overloads the system, something which is only supposed to happen on rare occasions but in practice happened 400,000 times last year.

Now there are calls for tougher restrictions on river in valleydevelopers, limiting their ability to connect new homes to sewers and requiring new homes to meet water efficiency standards.

There are also many ways that regulations on new houses could make a big difference. Using grey water from clothes and dishwashing to flush toilets, or from rainwater collected in tanks underground, would help.

Philip Dunne, MP, has put forward a bill to give water companies a duty to reduce pollution into UK rivers.

UPDATE ON FIXING MY EARLY RETROFIT

Slow progress!

By Mary Ann Hooper

I said I would report in this newsletter about  progress on my minor retrofit project in my house. All I can say is that I have now got an architect firm from Chesterfield helping me decide on the changes I will make. One of the architects is Passivhaus-qualified.

My main aim is to see whether my badly-installed loft insulation from 2011 can be improved and joined up with the external wall insulation to make it airtight (but still allowing ventilation to enter above the insulation into the attic space) I am also looking at a ventilation sytem with heat recovery.

The thermal image shows the heat loss in bluethermal image bright colours at the eaves all around my bungalow.

The architect has visited, discussed it with me, and taken lots of photos and many measurements. I await the outcome. Watch this space!
