Get Crafty with dlr Libraries!

This Spring, join dlr Libraries online on Zoom for a series of craft events for adults, children and schools.

Our series of events for adults will kick off at the end of this month with Crystal Art with Margaret Goulding, and starting in February with Me and The Moon, we have a series of events for children. More info and booking details via Get Crafty at dlr Libraries. 

For schools, we will be joined by The ReDiscovery Centre for workshops on Creative Waste and Me and The Moon will be hosting some workshops inspired by some of your favourite children's books. Imagine filling your home with the aromas of baking using these delicious recipes from Catherine Fulvio! Bakes will include soda bread, focaccia and a delicious apple and mango crumble. Watch as Catherine demonstrates both bread and dessert recipes where younger helpers at home are welcome to join in.

Did you know that the iconic Irish writer James Joyce was a loving Grandad with a devilish sense of humour?

Join illustrator Alan Nolan as he tells you all about Joyce’s children’s story The Cat and The Devil and shows you how to draw a fiendish feline… and then get the chance to design your own crazy monster in the James Joyce Ulysses Monster Draw-Along!

Alan Nolan is the author and illustrator of Fintan's Fifteen, Conor's Caveman and the Sam Hannigan series for the O’Brien Press, and is the illustrator of the popular Gordon's Game books written by Gordon D'Arcy and Paul Howard. Alan's latest books, Sam Hannigan and the Last Dodo, and Animal Crackers (with Sarah Webb) are both out now.

A new edition of The Cat and the Devil, illustrated by Brazilian artist Lelis was published by Little Island Books in 2021.

NRH Photographic Exhibition at Deansgrange Library

This exhibition features an artistic and varied collection of photographs created by patients and staff of the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) for Adults and Children, who attended a photography course in the NRH.

Join us for a series of fantastic creative writing workshops - two sessions of 1.5 hours - where you will create a story together as a group. All stories will be collated in an ebook anthology available online.

Join us to hear from three dynamic and imaginative poets, Romalyn Ante, Mary Jean Chan, and Annemarie Ní Churreáin, whose work helps us to understand the chaos and uncertainty of current times.

Each examines how our history shapes the way we look at the world today. Touching on hugely diverse themes, we visit Hong Kong, Donegal and the Philippines, and are united by tenderness and humanity. These writers have an astonishing use of language and their poetry never fails to bring us somewhere unexpected.

Rosamund Taylor hosts an uplifting and surprising evening with these poets.

ACORN tablets – Accessible technology in your hands

Since the onset of the pandemic, we have all had to rely a lot more on technology to stay connected. But those without access to devices, or those who do not have the skills to use them, can find themselves increasingly excluded from society.

The new ACORN tablet project from the dlr Digital Inclusion working group hopes to help bridge the digital divide by providing age-friendly, easy-to-use technology. The ACORN tablet is designed with the older person in mind, and the principle behind the tablet is to provide more accessible options for those with little or no computer or smart device experience. The home screen is clear and easy to navigate .

ACORN tablets are now available for lending to all dlr Library members. For more information on this lending scheme, contact your local branch.

Poetry Masterclass

Ancestral Offerings: writing myth in mundane life
Tues 8 February, 6.00pm

Romalyn Ante is a Filipino-British, Wolverhampton-based poet, essayist, translator, and editor. Her debut collection, Antiemetic for Homesickness came out with Chatto & Windus in 2020.

In this masterclass, we will look at the art of retelling myths through poetry. Romalyn will show you how she incorporated Philippine myths and legends when she worked on Antiemetic for Homesickness. We will also look at other poets' work and explore how you can utilise your own myths and legends to bring out the heart of your poem. You do not need to have full knowledge of your myths, just be willing to be surprised!

This class is free but by application. It is for committed poets, so applicants should include a record of two publications in journals.
