Science All Around with Ms. Catalian

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. Parents and other caregivers can nurture this curiosity in children of all ages by creating a positive and safe environment at home for exploration and discovery. Encourage children to curl up with a good science book. Below are some books.

Dear Parents:

With the weather changing quickly, I wanted to take this time and reminder you of appropriate winter wear for students. Below are some reminders about appropriate winter apparel.

The students will go outside every day, weather permitting. That is, if it isn’t raining, or the temperature isn’t freezing (below 40 degrees), we will go outside.  Please, please, please dress your child in appropriate clothing.

Inside the classroom:

Navy or Black Cardigan, Sweater, Sweatshirt or Jacket (solid color only, ISL logo optional).

Outside:
-a winter coat- Any color
-a winter hat-NOT a baseball hat
- ear muffs, scarfs and gloves - optional

Please make sure your child’s name is on all items.

YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO GO OUTSIDE WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW 40, IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A COAT.

If your child is in need of a winter coat, please reach out the school Social Worker Carrie Craven at ccraven@isl-edu.org for assistance.

Remember to check the website for important updates.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My office hours are Monday- Friday 8:00am-4:00pm.

Kindness Campaign
Congratulations to Ms. Laura and Ms. Eunide's kindergarten class! They were the winners of our Nov/Dec focus on "responsibility." They will celebrate with an ice cream party later in the month!

Our next theme is "self-determination." Self determination is all about believing in oneself and continuing to try, even when it is difficult. This is one of my favorite values to celebrate in young people. It really builds their sense of agency, and contributes to feelings of fulfillment. Of course, it's also very helpful practically as students are encouraged to persevere with work and try their best. Parents have been demonstrating immense self-determination throughout this pandemic- parenting through extremely challenging circumstances, and making sure children are at school ready to learn each day. We see you!

The next winning class will be announced before Mardi Gras Break.

Here are some resources connected to the theme:

Read alouds:
The Little Engine That Could read aloud (8 min)
Here's one of Dolly Parton reading a newer version (9 min)
I Choose to Try Again (5 min)
The Magical Yet (5 min)

Short songs:
The Power of Yet with Janelle Monae (Sesame Street)
Don't Give Up with Bruno Mars (Sesame Street)

Message from the Nurse Office
Greeting Parents,
First, I would like to thank all of you for working with us during these last few weeks. While the covid positive rate in the city remains high, know that classes will be coming in and out of quarantine frequently. All of these policies and rules are confusing. If you have any questions or concerns please email me.

IF YOUR CLASS IS EXPOSED:
Vaccinated students (2 weeks after 2nd dose) - remain on campus and test for covid in 5 days. Watch for symptoms.
Unvaccinated students - quarantine for 5 days at home and return with a negative test result or return after 10 days of quarantine without a test.

IF YOUR CHILD TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID:
If your child tests positive for covid they will be quarantined for 10 days. After this time, your child will be considered to have 90 immunity. They will not have to test or quarantine during this period.

I hope this clears things up. Together we will get through this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Kim Carbo RN
