Welcome to Wednesday!

Did you hear about the tsunami warning over the weekend? The warning emanated from an underwater volcano eruption in the Pacific Ocean which you could see from space! Although it didn’t seem to cause any destruction for Washington, it did send an 820 mph shockwave across the U.S. that cleared up Seattle’s Saturday fog by covering nearly 6,000 miles in a few hours. What wild weekend happenings!

Now, let’s move out of this weekend’s fog and into the rest of today’s news...

What Seattle is Talking About

🌮 Just when you think it can’t get any better, Seattle’s restaurant scene has one-upped itself yet again. If you’re looking to try some new eateries this year, check out Eater’s list of 38 essential restaurants for winter 2022. From Bothell down to White Center you’ll find a new bagel place, tastes of South Indian cuisine, the best new taco truck in town, and much more. (Eater)

💸 Washington's Fair Start for Kids Act expands the accessibility of affordable childcare across the state by lowering copays and increasing subsidy rates to certain providers. Without state assistance, child care costs for three kids can cost $2,900 per month. But with Fair Start, which was signed into law last year, families can receive state assistance that brings costs down to a fraction of the full amount. As the impact of the act continues to be felt, families, lawmakers, and others are still endeavoring to secure as much funding and support as possible to keep its benefits intact. (Crosscut)

📣 The Seattle MLK Jr. Coalition’s march and rally on Martin Luther King Day is always an inspirational gathering that calls attention to the power of collective action. This year’s event focused on the importance of truth and education and was led by community activists, educators, and longtime community members. Stops at King County Youth Jail and QFC centered the march around jobs for young people, support for union workers, and countering mass incarceration. 📈 COVID-19 cases have been surging among people held in King County Jails, prompting the president of the King County Correction Guild to urge for an immediate shut down of jail operations. This includes restricting arrests to violent crimes or crimes requiring mandatory arrest and possibly expanding the number of people who could be moved onto electronic home detention. Of the 1,363 inmates in custody, nearly 34 percent have tested positive or are observing quarantine protocols. (Seattle Times)

🍽️ The “Eggrolls” are not just a popular dish at Little Saigon’s ChuMinh Tofu deli, but also the name of a volunteer group serving up free meals in the neighborhood every Sunday. The group comprises of friends, mutual aid activists, neighbors and customers of the restaurant. Their goal is to supply good food to those who need it and to support unhoused people in the Little Saigon neighborhood. (Eater)

If you’re a Seattle biker, you know the risks that can come with biking through the city streets. Fortunately, there’s a way to indulge your biking interests from home by checking out this year’s virtual Bicycle Film Festival, screening through Jan. 30. The festival features over 40 films and filmmakers from more than a dozen countries.

You can buy a pass to see all of the films or stick to any of the four short film programs, each with a different focus. Some of the categories include Oscar nominated and award-winning shorts, stories that celebrate advocates and activists championing bike culture,, as well as stories of city-dwelling cyclists from around the world.

Tickets are available for purchase on a sliding scale from $10 to $20 per program.
