The conversation
Why?
Why did I embark on this endeavour? Why write about sex, pleasure, hedonism? Why is it important to have these discussions out in the open? Aren’t they supposed to be private and intimate?
Desire is the most fundamental human characteristic. Desire in all its forms. It’s the driving force in our lives. The want for more, better, different. It’s labeled as a sin, shame, guilt, and something we should be embarrassed by. It’s not. It’s the path to freedom. And that freedom is the reason for all the labels.
Sex is the most powerful manifestation of human desires. Pressing the naked skin together, crawling under another person’s skin, being inside their body, and allowing them to enter yours. Connectedness at its absolute. Desire so strong that it blinds us to everything else, ready to burn every shred of reason, in exchange for the pleasure it brings.
Sex can be fun and silly. Sex can be dark and meaningful. It can be all of those things at once. We should have respect for it but never feel shame or fear.
If we eliminate the shame which enshrouds it… if we start talking openly about it… if we normalize it… it will only empower us and those around us. Whether we do it with one person for the rest of our lives, or with thousands, with a life partner, or with a complete stranger - it doesn’t matter. We are the common denominator. And we can truly enjoy it only if we feel free of the social constructs surrounding it.
That’s why.
