Dear Partners, Associates and friends of GRLI

The second edition of Responsible Leadership, edited by Nicola Pless and Thomas Maak, has just been released by Routledge, and I had the honor of contributing a foreword to the volume. 14 years since the publication of the first edition the inquiry into global responsibility is more urgent and relevant than ever as we ask 'how might responsible leadership in and across cultures rise to the challenge of global culture wars and climate disruption?'

There is a clear and essential role for learning, education and development that transforms individuals as well as systems towards Globally Responsible thinking, acting and being. My hope is that GRLI's work in 2022 will inspire the continued inquiry into the development of responsible leadership that is both contextually and relationally sensitive as well as urgently action-oriented.

At our 2021 AGM in December it was agreed that, whilst the work to be done is by no means easy, we will adopt a simple “ABC” narrative to guide our mode of operation for the next 12 to 18 months:
  • Action-first mode of amplification signified by a shift towards “acting the call” over and above “calling for action”. This is also in order to be “felt” more rather than “heard” more.
  • Bridge-building among the learning of our partners and across to society which also helps span the science-practice, education-business, business-society, local-global divides.
  • Catalysing whole person connections to sustain whole system change. This is about helping develop and deepen critical awareness and inclusive relationships that brings a diversity of voices (perhaps not heard or maybe skeptical to our cause yet open to dialogue) to the conversation.
Kicking off GRLI's external advocacy for the year, I was a panelist for a Gaidar Forum session on Responsible Management Education. This provided the opportunity to share the GRLI perspective that the path forward for education includes prioritising regeneration, and more. View session.

In this issue we invite you to join us at upcoming events, including the EFMD Deans & Directors Conference and the AACSB Deans Conference with the Responsible Management Education Affinity Group meeting.

Registration has also opened for the 16-18 March Responsible Leadership Reimagined conference, hosted by the Centre for Responsible Leadership Studies (University of Stellenbosch Business School), in collaboration with the Allan Gray Centre for Values-based Leadership (University of Cape Town), the Albert Luthuli Leadership Institute (University of Pretoria) and the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative. The hybrid conference will be online-friendly for participants from across the globe.

GRLI Partners and Associates are reminded to check their email for an invitation to attend an information session regarding author submissions to the 2022 EFMD Global Focus magazine special issue on Global Responsibility.

And looking ahead, please save the date for our first 2022 Courageous Conversation on 23 Feb, with Chris Taylor, on the topic of "Hope in a Time of Collapse."

Warm wishes,
John North
Executive Director

GRLI Partners and Associates are warmly invited to collaborate on a 2022 EFMD Global Focus magazine special issue on Global Responsibility in leadership and practice, marking 20 years since the idea for GRLI was first conceived with the publication of the Bangkok Manifesto.

We are seeking authors, co-authors, and reviewers for submitted pieces from all our past and current GRLI community colleagues. Our emphasis will be on the sharing of learning and demonstrable impact and encourage a reflective tone and contributions that highlight both successes as well as failures.

To kick off this project, we will be hosting a 1-hour Zoom meeting to discuss this publication’s timeline and explore possible article topics together. Please check your in-box for a calendar invite to the sessions.

We’re eager to see the expansion of learning and impact since GRLI & Global Responsibility were first featured in a 2007 special issue (cover photo above) at the launch of the Global Responsibility initiative.
