The final round of engagement on proposals for a brand new community leisure complex in the heart of Kingston has now finished. Respondents felt the proposals show a good range of facilities which are accessible for all, and put sustainability at the heart of the scheme.

A statement from the Mayor of Kingston on Holocaust Memorial Day
This Thursday, 27 January, is Holocaust Memorial Day. Councillor Sushila Abraham, Mayor of Kingston, said:
"Holocaust Memorial Day is a day of reflection, a day when we reflect on past horrors, pay tribute to the millions of people who have lost their lives in genocides across the world and remember the strength of those who survived but whose lives were and will always will be shaped by those experiences."

Celebrating Kingston’s Tamil Heritage

New Malden’s Tamil Harvest Festival event this Saturday was a roaring success, celebrating our borough’s rich Tamil heritage. It was a joyous occasion including dancing and a parade, as well as the unveiling of a plaque marking our twin city, Jaffna in Sri Lanka. We are so proud of the Tamil community in our borough, and we were so pleased to celebrate Kingston’s diversity over the weekend. Thank you to everybody who came along or contributed!

The Mayor of London and central government have imposed housing targets of 964 homes per year on the borough. There is a statutory requirement for Kingston to meet this target. Whilst listening to views as part of the Local Plan further engagement, many local people told us they find it hard to afford a home in Kingston, and that it's important to make sure new developments are of high quality and respect the character and heritage of our area.
We are therefore setting up a Citizens’ Panel to create new design guidance for the Kingston town centre area. Selected panel members will be given £150 in vouchers to join three half-day workshops in 2022 - the first on 12 March.

Did you know that the Highway Code rules are changing?
|

From 29 January, the Highway Code will be changing to allow for better protection to road users who may be more vulnerable in the event of accidents, such as pedestrians and cyclists. For example, road users must now give way to pedestrians waiting to cross. The new rules apply to all road users. Find out more about the updated Highway Code.

20mph speed limits to roll out in Surbiton

We’re making roads in Surbiton safer, cleaner and greener by rolling out a 20mph speed limit across the neighbourhood. You may notice signs and road markings being installed from next week. Latest COVID-19 Guidance
Despite easing of restrictions across England, Kingston is currently seeing a rise in cases in school-aged children, and as a result in their parents’ age group too. This is having a very real impact on our schools. Our borough’s schools only want to close as a last resort, so it’s important that we continue with regular Lateral Flow Testing (LFT rapid tests) to pick up any Covid cases in children or parents who have no symptoms. Anyone testing positive on an LFT should register the result to help with a continued understanding of the spread of the virus.

Though latest guidance changes mean that we no longer have to wear face masks, we still ask everyone to think carefully about our own personal decisions when it comes to the safe behaviours we’ve all become used to throughout the pandemic - and we know that many people will still choose to wear face coverings in crowded settings, something we fully support. The same goes for other safe measures like good ventilation of indoor spaces, hand hygiene and regular testing before meeting others.

16 & 17 year olds can now get booster jabs. In Kingston around three quarters of this age group have had at least one dose of the vaccine, the second highest in London. It’s never been easier for anyone over 16 in Kingston to book now via the NHS National Booking Service online or by visiting their local walk-in clinic.
