A Note from the Directors' Desks
|
|
We hope the New Year is treating you and your family well.
We want to begin this installment of The Write Now with a poem about wintertime beginnings, written by abstract artist and architect Richard Meier, titled, "Winter Morning."
Shyly coated in greys, blacks, browns - / to keep us out of sight of the cold - / we weren't expecting this this morning: sun / and shadows, like a summer's evening, like summer / teasing.
In this letter, you'll get a glimpse of what the weeks ahead will look like for Write On, Door County.
First, you'll find information about the upcoming deadline for our 2022 Dick Scuglik Residency and Scholarship, which will be awarded to a poet or other writer interested in ekphrastic writing. Apply today! You'll want to act fast. The application deadline is February 15.

2022 Residency Scholarship Closing Soon!
|
|
Write On, Door County is pleased to offer the Dick Scuglik Memorial Residency and Scholarship to a poet or other writer with demonstrated ability and interest in ekphrastic writing.
The application deadline is February 15, 2022. The residency is awarded annually the third week of June.
The program honors the memory of Dick Scuglik and his passion for painting and books.
The selected writer will be paired with a Door County visual artist. The artist and writer will share work with each other. Each will create new work in response to other’s work prior to the start of the residency.
During the residency, both writer and artist will participate in a public event at which the new work is shared, along with a conversation about the creative process.
While ekphrastic writing is most common in poetry, Write On welcomes applications from all genres, provided the work sample submitted fits the classification of ekphrasis.
A scholarship fund is available to assist the writer with travel expenses related to the residency.

What does it mean to write creative nonfiction and memoir in 2022?
How to write out of our personal urgency while also asking questions about community, survival, isolation, and power—all that is wrong with the world and all we’d like to make better?
How does it feel to be alive right now?
We’ll think about those questions, and more, alongside all the matters of craft: voice, structure, focus, aboutness, sonics, description, polarity, openings, and closings.
We’ll look at some excerpts of outside work, but your writing will be our primary text. There will be time for exercises.
Along the way we’ll work hard, take care of each other, and make sure that joy and seriousness share the same space.

The battle with the editor in our head, that critical creature who peers over our shoulder, saying, "Wrong, wrong, wrong."
What helps Wilson overcome the inherent difficulties of developing a project?
Among other things, the tremendous, virtually endless - yet invisible - gifts which writing can offer all of us.
