Forward Forward

St. Olave’s is situated on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek Nations, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. This territory is also covered by the Toronto Purchase. Today, Toronto is home to many Indigenous people and we recognize their enduring presence and connection to this land. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather on this land, and we commit to and pray for the work of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. We are closed to in-person worship.

Rector’s Messsage

One of the most distinctive features of the Anglican Communion service is the Prayer of Humble Access:

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, Trusting in our own righteousness, But in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy So much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, Whose property is always to have mercy ... (BCP, p. 83)

The prayer is based on two healing stories found in St. Matthew’s Gospel. The first is the healing of the Centurion’s servant (Matthew 8.5-13), which forms part of our second lesson this Sunday (and is depicted here), and the second is the healing of a Canaanite woman’s daughter (Matthew 15.21-28). The Centurion’s “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof ... ” and the Canaanite woman’s “Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table,” were blended to form the backbone of this beloved prayer.

Interestingly, the two stories both involve the healing of Gentile (non-Jewish) people. And as such, the prayer is an invitation to all of us who would follow in their footsteps. As the prophet predicted, “In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men ... out of all languages of the nations ... shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.” (Zechariah 8.23)
