January 2022
From The President

The advent of a new year is a good time to take stock of where we are, what lies ahead and how strategic planning can help protect the tangible and intangible assets vested in our Clubs and our members. Though we enter 2022 in much the same way that we entered 2021, we happily have more knowledge and are better protected than ever before. Additionally—as I have discovered when talking to Member Clubs—yacht club people are naturally optimistic. Race, regatta and social calendars have already reappeared, indicating that we are planning for the best. But as I write this, Covid is still the spectre at the feast.

Arguably the biggest challenge we face is maintaining social and financial viability at our clubs through member retention. The past two years have been testing and uncertain but the fact that we are all in this thing together has done much to mitigate our fears. We have seen that, as a group with shared interests, we are nothing if not resilient.

It gives me great pleasure, then, to announce that registration is now open for two upcoming ICOYC events: the 2022 Cruise in the Chesapeake Bay hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club and the 2022 America’s Regional Conference, hosted by Southern Yacht Club. More on both, below.

As we enter 2022, I encourage you to plan for the best, hedge for the worst and know that we will come out of this stronger.

I wish you all safe sailing.

David Mead
President

2021 State of the Yacht Club Industry

In 2021, the ICOYC launched a series of surveys, the results of which we reported on regularly in The Currents. Topics included Member Volunteers, Membership Trends, Sponsorship, Club Fleets, Communications and COVID and the results shone a light on trends, challenges and ideas from yacht clubs around the world. Now, Members can read these survey results and learn how to apply best practices to your club.

RVYC Members Inducted into Sailing Hall of Fame

In October 2021, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s David Miller, Paul Cote, and John Ekels were inducted into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame. The three won bronze in the Soling Class at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich aboard their Soling, Terrestrial New World Cuckoo, a name Miller credited to the sense of humour of the late Paul Cote. At the induction ceremony, Miller and Ekels wore their Team Canada blazers from 1972. Cote’s plaque was accepted by his brother Bill. Miller was further recognized for his Sears Cup win, his two other Olympic campaigns in Stars and Dragons, as well as his involvement in offshore racing and America’s Cup challenges. Read an interview with David Miller from “On Deck” posted to the Sail Canada website, HERE.
