Journey of the Universe Newsletter

January 2022

Happy new journey around the sun!

To kick off the year, we’re excited to launch the Journey of the Universe: 10 Years Later podcast! In this conversation series, Sam King will speak with a range of scholars, artists, and environmentalists inspired by the epic story of cosmic evolution.

Our first episode features Tom Collins, a longtime teacher of world history, philosophy, and religious studies. Tom taught some of the first courses on the universe story at independent secondary schools across the United States. 10 years ago, he spoke with Journey co-author Mary Evelyn Tucker about the transformative power of teaching the universe story to young people. (Listen to this Journey Conversation here.) In this new episode, Sam and Tom continue the conversation on how integral story can help shape the future of education.

Check out our inaugural episode here!

Remembering E. O. Wilson and Thomas Lovejoy

We mourn the passing of two great biologists, E. O. Wilson and Tom Lovejoy. Both of these scientists had a deep appreciation for evolution, ecology, and biodiversity as that which awakens awe and wonder. In this spirit, they embraced the epic of evolution perspective. After the premiere of the Journey film (March 2011) Lovejoy gave the keynote talk at the dinner at the Peabody Museum at Yale. He introduced the film in several other settings including the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC.  He provided a warm endorsement for the Journey of the Universe book, published by the science division of Yale University Press.

Here are just a few of the many online reflections honoring their life and contributions:
