February 2022
Let the good times roll!
It's Mardi Gras season! Mardi Gras season begins after the feast of the three kings commonly known as the Epiphany. Last month the Imaginarium celebrated the Epiphany with the Star of Bethlehem shows that explored some of the astronomical possibilities for the Star that guided the Wise Men to Bethlehem.
This month the Imaginarium explores the astronomical roots of the Mardi Gras season from the Epiphany through lent to Easter. Krissie Kellogg's Mardi Gras Stargazing Show promises to be a trove of information illuminating the season's relationship to the moon and the vernal equinox. Have you ever noticed that "Fat Tuesday" does not occur on a full moon.
Oui, Let the Good Times Roll with Led Zeppelin
On Friday, February 4, at 8:15p.m.
"Led Zeppelin" is back in the Imaginarium. People have been calling and emailing to find out when it will return to our schedule as it remains one of the most popular music shows ever performed in planetariums. The boys are back and we are ready to rock and roll.
On Friday, February 4, at 7:00p.m.
the Imaginarium will premier Asteroid-Mission Extreme, narrated by Sigourney Weaver. This full dome show takes audiences on a journey 65 million years in the making to discover how asteroids are both a danger and an opportunity for those of us on planet Earth. This is not science fiction. This is the not too distant future.
Actually, The University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy (IfA) leads the world in its efforts and ability to discover Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAS).

Hawaii’s Eyes on the Sky – Protectors of Earth
IfA recently received a $15 million NASA grant to continue its world-leading efforts. IfA’s Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) located atop Haleakala currently find nearly as many NEOs and PHAs as the rest of the world’s observatories combined.
The Pan-STARRS team of astronomers has had a huge impact on astronomy with a host of discoveries, which include the discovery of thousands of near-Earth objects, hundreds of Kuiper belt objects, dozens of comets, as well as, Oumuamua, the first interstellar object. Pan-STARRS data is available to the world and it has become the photometric standard for astronomical research. The Pan-STARRS archive of survey data is one of the most heavily used archives in astronomy throughout the world.
