Our Dream Home!

It has been nearly a year since the Abdirahman family purchased 1111 N. McBride and now they are preparing to move into their 3,208 square foot renovated home!  The Abdirahmans utilized numerous programs to make this renovation possible.

Ahmed Abdirahman took the HUD-approved Homebuyer Education Class through Home HeadQuarters.  Upon completion, buyers can qualify for down payment & closing cost assistance.  He applied for and received a $30,000 Purchase/Rehab grant from Empire Housing.  With the assistance of Peace Inc.'s Weatherization Assistance Program, the home received two new energy-efficient furnaces and water heaters.  Ahmed applied for the Onondaga County's Healthy Homes Program for new windows throughout and exterior siding. He then hired contractors to complete the renovations outlined in the Land Bank's mandatory renovation specs. What wasn't covered by grants, was financed with a construction loan through Cooperative Federal Credit Union.

They turned a two-family home into a huge single-family home with eight bedrooms and four full bathrooms!  This family of 11 is excited to enjoy this new space of their own. There is potential to expand and add additional living space by finishing the third-floor attic.  Ahmed's son is excited to make it a game room.

Congratulations to the Abdirahman family on a beautiful home transformation. This is the third Land Bank property recently renovated on this Northside block.
Think Spring Think Green

With Spring right around the corner, it's time to think green!  This spring the Greater Syracuse Land Bank will award three groups a “Green Lots Grant” of up to $1,500 for capital improvements on a Land Bank-owned vacant lot, such as raised beds, trees and other perennials, and other materials to beautify the property or tend to a garden.

Put together your proposal now!  Applications for Green Lots Grants are due by Friday, April 15, 2022.  Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the Greater Syracuse Land Bank and Syracuse Grows.  The tenants are responsible for mowing, littler pickup, and property maintenance. Download the application and the list of available lots on our website at syracuselandbank.org under the Green Lots Program.

Mrs. Fair is a fierce advocate in the fight to end childhood lead poisoning.

The clouds are gone and the renovation is complete on this 528 square foot home.  The property was purchased by Harris and Harris LLC and is currently owner-occupied.  It may be small in size but it's great when you can call it your own home!  This is another Land Bank property rehabbed and back on the tax rolls.
