Artist Opportunities

Dear <<First Name>>

We are in the final stages of recruitment for South East Open Studios 2022. A huge thank you to all the artists who have already signed up, and a quick reminder to those who would like to take part but haven’t quite got around to it…there is just ONE WEEK left to register!

SEOS 2022 will run from the 3rd to the 19th June and registration closes on January 31st.

This year we have welcomed lots of ‘new’ artists and makers – that is, artists and makers who are new to us! We thought you were out there, working away at your practice, but the nature of being an artist or maker is that very often it is an isolated activity. Our mission is to connect creatives to strengthen the visual arts across the whole of the South East, so even if you aren’t taking part in the event this year, do use it as an opportunity to get to know your local artists and makers and support your local creative community.

As usual we have had LOTS of artists ask for help in finding studio space to share or show work. It seems post-pandemic there is a hesitancy in opening homes to the general public, and a desire to form bigger groups that can share together.

Our Area Coordinators have done their best to put people together but in some cases it has proved difficult. If we have not been able to help you, the event is a great opportunity to find a potential ‘partner’ for next year. Make a point of meeting ALL the artists and makers in your area, talk to them about their process, find areas of interest or overlap, get to know them over the next 12 months. Many of our artists have built up great relationships and exhibit together year after year.

Here are all the opportunities still available, let us know ASAP if you are interested or can help by offering space:

  • One 3D artist needed in Fairwarp (ideally wood turner) they would be provided with their own shed and a beautiful 3 acre garden to display work alongside ceramicists, painters and printmakers.
  • Two artists (3D and 2D) needed in Sundridge to share a small barn and lovely garden, in idyllic country spot, with established mosaic artist.
  • 1 x 2D artist looking for space in Chiddingstone
  • 2 x 2D artists looking for space in Tunbridge Wells
  • 1 x 2D artist looking for space in Chatham
  • 1 x 2D artist looking for space in Tenterden
  • 1 x 2D artist looking for space in Bexhill-on-Sea

SEOS appeals to everybody, but is an especially great opportunity for the artist or maker starting out on their creative journey – it is a great way of getting your work out there without having to ‘exhibit’ which can be both expensive and scary. We delight in the knowledge that some of our more established artists still take an active part in SEOS every year – it forms a part of their annual planning in amongst all the big London shows and prize-winning!

Kate Schuricht explains why SEOS works for her:

Over a decade ago, I was new to the area and SEOS was a fantastic way for me to meet and connect with other artists and local customers. It really helped to put me on the map and it continues to be a pivotal show in my busy exhibition calendar.

SEOS helped me to establish an enriching and supportive artist network, leading to exciting collaborations with other creatives. Meeting the public in my own work and home environment is a rewarding and successful experience for both visitor and artist. It has led to some good sales, an ever-growing customer base and a range of interesting commissions and opportunities. I feel really proud to be part of such a highly considered Open Studios event.

I love the way that visitors are so excited to see artwork on show outside of a gallery setting. Opening our homes and workspaces to the public offers a greater sense of engagement, as the public can ask questions, see demonstrations of different art forms, buy artwork and sign up for workshops. SEOS visitors often become loyal customers and good friends. It is so beneficial to be part of a well coordinated event, with such a good reputation.

We produce up to 30,000 copies of our high-quality Guide every year. It is a beautifully produced A5 full colour booklet forming a comprehensive catalogue of artists and makers in the region.

From mid May through June it is available from many targeted outlets including libraries, tourist information centres, colleges, art shops, coffee shops and galleries. It is sought after and collected by visitors and artists. Many copies are kept for reference long after the event in June.

Advertising in the Guide is a great way of promoting yourself and drawing even more attention to your show, it is perfect for local businesses wanting to promote themselves to artists and art lovers, and relevant to any art related business in the region.

Prices start at £50 for a small ad through to £400 for a full page.

Enquire and/or apply.

SEOS is run by volunteers, we are all artists and we care passionately about the visual arts. There are a number of positions on the SEOS committee that have small honorariums attached to them and we are always looking for fresh energy to join us.

We are a friendly bunch of enthusiastic people. Getting involved in SEOS is a great way to get to know other artists and makers, and put a little bit back into your community...do let us know if you are interested.

Currently, we really need a marketing person to help us promote the event. If this is you - even if you can only give a little of your time - we would love to hear from you : info@seos-art.org.

We are always interested in hearing from members with ideas for stories and features, so do please tell us if there is anything you would like to see, contact: news@seos-art.org.

Pop-up opportunity for Tunbridge Wells members:

We will be inviting SEOS members in Tunbridge Wells to take part in a FREE pop-up in the Royal Victoria Place, utilising the windows where the GAP shop used to be, through May and June. This has proven to be an extremely successful way for artists to have their work seen by hundreds of shoppers. If you would like to be involved, make sure you register for SEOS this year and sit tight - you will be contacted in February.

We would like to make this newsletter section available to our members to use for anything art-related that they would like to share, buy or sell…let us know if you have anything for the next issue.
