Notes From The Editor

Aloha friends of SOKO. Over the past year, this newsletter has introduced you to all the artist members of SOKO, the South Kona Artists Collective. Now that you’ve met us, this newsletter will be going to a quarterly format. To kick off the Winter 2022 edition, you are now the first to see the brochure and map of SOKO’s annual Artists Studio Tour, beautifully designed by Mark Martel

As you can see, there will be 19 artists participating, in 13 separate venues throughout South Kona. All studios will be open 9am-4pm on Saturday, February 26 and Sunday, February 27. You’ll be able to meet the artists, see them at work, and talk with them about all that goes into the creation of their art. You’ll also be able (surprise!) to purchase work from all these artists, in a variety of price ranges. You will certainly find a treasure or two to take home, or for a lovely gift. We’ve missed you for the past year, and we’re all excited to see you again!

Masks will be required in all venues, and all COVID protocols in effect at the time will be observed. At the time of this writing, that means that no more than 10 people will be allowed in any indoor setting at one time. This may mean that you may have to wait a little to get in to a few of the studios, but past experience has shown us that we rarely have more than that number at any one time anyway, so be assured that the wait, if any, will not be long, and will be worth it. Just follow the map on the enclosed brochure (hard copies will be available in many businesses throughout Hawai’i Island, as well as in each artist’s studio), and on the SOKO website at www.sokoartists.com. Join us for the Tour!

Mark Martel now offers his most popular images in beautiful, long-lasting Gicleé Prints on stretched canvas, in many sizes. Look for a full display at his studio on the SOKO Studio Tour. He also will be introducing brand-new works, including many offered as postcards, greeting cards and photo prints. Kathleen T. Carr has two photographs featured in the current January-February issue of Ke Ola magazine. Her Green Sands Beach is on the Table of Contents, and Turtle, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is on the Editorial page. She will have both of these photographs for sale at her studio during the tour, plus many more new and old favorites. Take a look at her website at www.kathleentcarr.com. You can order any photograph at any size from 6x8" to 30x40" on watercolor paper, aluminum or canvas.
Kim Thompson, Textile Artist: "Just in time for our upcoming SOKO tour, these Peacock Feathers scarves, woven in multiple shades of red and teal are some of my favorite designs. Long, warm and cozy in luxurious tencel, they reflect light and iridescence as they drape around a neck or shoulders.
They are just a few of the many hand woven, hand dyed and botanically printed items available at SKEA February 26 & 27. Hope to see you there!"

Most SOKO artists are available for studio showings, by appointment. To contact them, go to the ARTISTS PAGE on the SOKO website for contact information, or contact SOKO directly through the CONTACT PAGE, and we will put you in touch with the artist(s) of your choice.
