What Motivates You?
January 21, 2022

First, From the Heart

The question I am hearing over and over again is, “How do we stay hopeful?” How do we focus on the good when we are surrounded by so much gone awry? When we are constantly fed difficult news, and face challenging circumstances, it’s understandable that we have trouble trusting that all will be OK.

Hand in hand with this inquiry, we also wonder, “How do we stay motivated?” In a recent conversation with several compassion colleagues, we explored what gives us each hope, and fuels our motivation to continue showing up and contributing our piece to the greater whole. We shared about drawing inspiration and motivation from nature, love, children, family, purpose, and service, to name a few. We also appreciated what a gift and privilege it was to be in connection and community with each other.

Our intention is to be in connection and community with you through this newsletter and the Center’s global gatherings, research, LinkedIn and other social channels. If you are ready for a deeper dive, please consider participating in one of the Spring cohorts of our signature eight-week online program in Compassionate Leadership and Resilience beginning mid-March. We invite you to join us on a remarkable journey that overflows with hope and motivation for the compassionate future we all believe in.

With heart,
Laura

Motivating with Compassion

We are surrounded by fear-based motivation. Marketers create a fear of missing out. Politicians promise disaster if they don’t win. Many organizational leaders use this approach, too. But fear is not our only motivator. To promote flourishing, leaders need to create psychological safety, encourage creative exploration, and respond with an attitude that treats failure as a learning opportunity. Read more.

Practice Matters

Fanning the Flame

Woosh! An amazing idea just flew in, showing up from nowhere. Download, inspiration, impulse, knowing? Where did this notion come from? What caused it to arise? Has this always been within me? I observe with curiosity and wonder as these sparks sometimes move into form and spill out into the world.

Perhaps I am tuning in to a blank canvas of infinite possibility. Is there a cosmic backdrop that can and will lovingly hold anything I can dream or imagine? Or do I remain boxed inside the lines thwarted by fears and doubts that snuff out the nascent spark before it ignites? How do I get past what seem like hard-wired limitations and beliefs that negate a new direction, path, or potential?

I yearn to inhabit the unexplored territory that is about to emerge. The space is fertile and ready to expand. I desire to try it on, smell it, touch it, taste it, and feel it – whatever it is – in a way that wraps the ethereal notion in tangible meaning. With courage and compassion, I can choose this route, and peek behind the curtain of the unknown. Only then can it become known - to me and others - in service to all.

When can we practice? Always!
