Victorian Aerobatic Championships

August 14th to 18th 2022 at Tocumwal, NSW.

The 2022 contest sequences are now available online at https://aerobaticsaustralia.com.au/competitions/sequences/ well, all except Entry however anyone with an aerobatic endorsement should be comfortable having a go at the Graduate sequence after a little bit of extra dual instruction, whether in the Cessna Aerobat or the Super Decathlon. The Sportsman sequence suits the more serious competitor in the Super Decathlon with more time available to practice.

David is happy to help anyone get into the competition in either aircraft. The Sportsman Known sequence has some figures which require expert consideration to score well. Then a good Free sequence must be developed in order to gain a winning edge.

A revised checklist and operations notes for the Super Decathlon is available online at http://ozaeros.net.au/aircraft/superd/ with changes as follows:
  • the new Part 91 rules which include airfield performance
  • improved guidance on starting the engine
  • improved guidance on engine management, especially with the low inertia MT propeller
Incidentally, VH-UPG has a new battery plus a Skytek 149NL starter to replace that old 149-LSX "bump and start" unit.

Cessna A152 Aerobat VH-HEZ is still working hard at the Peninsula Aero Club at Tyabb. I'm looking at replacing the old AH with a flash new electronic device. I like the Garmin GI 275 as it allows pilots to easily download data from their flight to their phone. It is more expensive than other solutions so perhaps not warranted - advice and suggestions are welcome.
 
Super Decathlon VH-FKM has found a new home at Tyabb.

Compare the AAC sequences with those from the International Aerobatic Club here. The IAC has a published policy on what aircraft types are to be used as baselines for their sequences. They also have a simplified set of programs for Intermediate category. No wonder an IAC regional contest takes half the number of days as a typical Australian contest.

CASA has introduced a lot of new guidance material in recent months as well as slipping in some rule changes with Part 91. My favourites are:
  • AC 21-08 on approval of modifications which includes: "A small camera, or similar device, is not an aircraft component or an aeronautical product if it is: ....... in accordance with the above criteria is not a change to the approved design of the aircraft and is not maintenance of the aircraft. A Part 21 modification design approval is not required in those circumstances. ... The approved design of the aircraft would not be affected by mounting means such as a suction cup. .... that meets the above criteria is cargo. It is therefore the operator and pilot in command’s responsibility to ensure that the device is used, restrained and stowed in compliance with CAO 20.16.2 and such that the safety of the aircraft is not adversely affected for the particular operation. A formal approval from CASA or an ADO or authorised person is not required in these circumstances."
  • Incidentally, I'd place more reliance on AC 21-08 than the contrary advice in AC 91-17! "EFBs with temporary mounts that attach to the aircraft (e.g. suction mounts, Velcro pads etc.) are regarded as unsecured devices, and they should be stowed during critical phases of flight. ...... All EFB mounts attached to the aircraft structure require airworthiness approval (Subpart 21.M). An unsafe condition must not be created when attaching any EFB control yoke attachment/mechanism or mounting device. For example, the weight of the EFB and mounting bracket combination may affect flight control system dynamics, even though the mount alone may be considered light."
  • AC 91-02 on Guidelines for suitable places to take off and land with lots of excellent information although it studiously avoids mentioning the new Part 91 rules for the source of data (those old "P" charts are no longer legal) and, unfortunately doesn't say much about the effect of higher landing approach speeds - essential for Decathlon pilots - go to the USA FAA for that.
  • I also like the new Part 91 Acceptable Means of Compliance and Guidance Material document as it is much more useful than the so-called Plain English Guide.

Aerobatic Contests

I still plan to take the Super Decathlon VH-UPG to the Victorian Aerobatic Championships in April and it will be available for pilots to compete up to Sportsman category.  What about Cessna A152 VH-HEZ? If anyone is interested please email David below.
