As a small business operating bootstrapped on the power of hundreds of freelancers, we're passionate about promoting and supporting South Asian-founded small businesses. That's why we're committing ourselves to a new monthly newsletter featuring brands worth shopping from. In all transparency, all the businesses we will feature have paid a small fee in exchange for brand awareness. We'll be shamelessly plugging the stuff we're up to, but it'll be worth it, we promise. 💥 So, if you or someone you know has started a biz and needs some love, email us at sales@browngirlmagazine.com.

Desi Paws

Introducing DesiPaws — a line of fun, quirky, South Asian-themed pet products! Founded by Meenakshi & Abhishek in 2020, the inspiration for DesiPaws came shortly after they welcomed home their little pandemic puppy, Nacho.

As first-time dog parents, they were suddenly exposed to the wonderful world of pet products and it seemed like there was a fun toy or product for every theme you could imagine! Except…nothing desi-themed. The lack of South Asian representation among pet products was disappointing — after all, we should be able to share our culture with our furry family and friends too.

That’s when they decided to launch DesiPaws! Their mission is to create fun desi products that delight pets and pet parents alike. They currently have a samosa and a maggi chew toy, which you can order from their Etsy store, with several more releases planned for 2022.

What’s more: a portion of DesiPaws proceeds is donated to Blue Cross India to support their mission of caring for abandoned and stray animals in India.

DesiPaws believes representation matters, even among our furry family and friends. Plus, which pet (or pet parent) doesn’t like a good samosa!?

 ArtsyBrownLady

Meet Gurvinder, an artist, counselor, and dog mom based in Melbourne, Australia.

She started ArtsyBrownLady in 2020 as an art page where people started enjoying and connecting to thoughts and emotions behind the art. Today, it's a unique platform that uses art to call out traditional systems of oppression like racism, homophobia/transphobia, colorism, and sexism.

"As a trauma survivor, I create art that voices my lived experience. Through my art, I want to inspire change, connect with the South Asian diaspora, raise awareness of colorism concerns in the South Asian community, and stand up to racism in Australia. Each piece of artwork is deliberately curated with the hope that it will strike a chord in people's hearts and enrich their lives in some manner." — Gurvinder Kaur

By ordering from ArtsyBrownLady's shop, you are advancing the vision of empowered South Asian communities.
