We are still looking for participants for our Research - Enabling Housing for Ethnic Women

Housing is a serious issue in Aotearoa New Zealand. The solutions tend to be market driven in line with many New Zealanders continuing to see house ownership as an investment rather than simply a home. This is at odds with the United Nations special rapporteur whose report on the New Zealand housing situation declared that New Zealand needed to start seeing housing as a human right to which people were entitled – not as a speculative asset. Part of the problem is that the purchasing options in New Zealand’s housing market are geared towards private ownership and capital gains. Internationally there are more diverse housing options. For instance, overseas there are more examples of shared co-housing, cooperative housing and rentals owned by limited or non-profit housing associations. All of these options focus on housing as a right – not as an asset. These options have the potential to suit those who find themselves on an average income but still locked out of home ownership and long term housing options. Many women, and their families, find themselves in this bracket.

Our research seeks to discover the barriers and enablers experienced by women, particularly ethnic women, when trying to secure a home. It then seeks to establish whether collaborative housing options would be an appealing alternative – and which options would be considered the most desirable. This will help focus our attention onto further exploring how to diversify the housing options in the New Zealand market. Overseas there is considerable central and local government support for collective housing, with local government allocating land for collective housing and then running competitions to secure architects for example. New Zealand lacks these kinds of government driven initiatives. We also are looking to talk to those in the housing sector to investigate, among other things, the options for local and central government to take a proactive stance on supporting the growth of collective housing options in New Zealand. Local or central government running a pilot project would be great to see for example. If you are interested in helping us and fit the research participant criteria, please fill in the form contained in the advert. If you would like more information please email estelle.townshend.denton@gmail.com I would be happy to provide more details.  We hope to have you on board - it would be great to hear your views!
