Pick and mix with Primroses

If your garden or patio is in need of a cheerful pop of colour right now, our top tip is to plant up some Primroses! We suggest mixing them in containers with other late winter and early spring colour, such as Heathers, Saxifrage, Bellis, Anemones and small bulbs like Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’.

Our Primrose collection features an array of bright colours that will keep on flowering well into the spring. We have a couple of special varieties too: ‘Cottage Cream’, which is very similar in appearance to our native Primrose, and ‘Star Fever’, which has slightly lacy, star-shaped blooms. You’ll also find Polyanthus, a close cousin of the Primroses, which bears multi-headed flowers on sturdy, upright stems. Come and take your pick!

A seed of an idea...

Now is the perfect time to go through your seed stash (or to start one!) and think about what you’d like to grow this year. The seed racks in the Riverside shop have been filling up with all sorts of wonderful seeds for you to try, from herbs to flowers to veg. To help you get started, we have put together two concise guides to seed sowing, covering edibles and annual flowers.

Spud-tacular seed potatoes

It is also time to buy seed potatoes, in preparation for planting out in March and April. Our shop is well stocked with varieties, suited to all sorts of uses. So whether you dream of harvesting your own tender new potatoes or have a hankering to ‘grow your own chips’, come in and see what’s on offer.

To get your seed potatoes ready for planting, you can ‘chit’ them now by storing them in a light, frost-free place. This will encourage them to develop short, strong shoots that will give them a head start once they are planted in the ground.

On our blog you can read more about seed potatoes and how to chit them. And if you want to look ahead to what to do in spring when it’s time to plant them, we have a post about that too.

Summer bulbs now in!

As if the above bounty were not enough, our shop has also received its first shipment of summer bulbs and tubers. Brighten up a winter’s day with a browse of our Gladiolus, Dahlias, Lilies and more.

Hold off planting these in the ground until soil temperatures have warmed up in spring. You can also plant into containers in spring - or earlier if you can store the containers in a protected spot like a greenhouse or conservatory. For containers we recommend using peat-free bulb fibre, also available in our shop.

Happy to help.

If you have any questions at all then please feel free to contact us, we'd love to hear from you!
