The TMC Library is Offering the Following "Brown Bag" Webinar
The McGovern Historical Center & Me: Thinking about Archives and Legacies
Archivists from the McGovern Historical Center (MHC) will present a virtual brown-bag talk on Archives and Legacies. Faculty, researchers, and staff across the TMC are making history every day. Archivists can help preserve that history by ensuring that these stories are documented and accessible to future researchers. Attendees will learn about how the MHC can support their work, how (and what!) to donate to the archives, and how historical materials are made available for research.
If you only have 30 minutes to spare, join us for this virtual webinar. Everyone who registers, will receive a Zoom link to join the webinar. Register here
New Exhibit Featuring
Dr. Bertner on
Display at the TMC Library
The McGovern Historical Center is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit at the TMC Library. This exhibit celebrates the life and work of one of the Texas Medical Center’s founders and strongest champions, Dr. Ernst Bertner.
His career touches on several early milestones for the TMC, and you’ll see him receiving the deed to the property at the TMC Dedicatory dinner, presiding over the Dedication of the M.D. Anderson Hospital for Cancer Research, and attending the laying of the cornerstone for Methodist Hospital (and much more).
Presented in two sections, the exhibit uses materials from the archives to highlight both Dr. Bertner’s professional contributions and his personal life.
Dr. Bertner’s collectionoffers a tour through the formative years of the TMC. The “professional” half of the exhibit shows him receiving the deed to the property at the TMC Dedicatory Dinner, presiding over the Dedication of the M.D. Anderson Hospital for Cancer Research, and attending the laying of the cornerstone for Methodist Hospital, all within a span of six years. The exhibit tells this story through a mixture of photographs, event programs, and newspaper clippings.
In 1660, Sir Christopher Wren founded the first “invisible college of natural philosophers and physicians” known as the “Royal Society of London,” even though its members were not royal. Membership was by invitation only, and highly selective and elitist.
Since that time, there has been an explosion of professional medical societies and their associated society publications. There are newer organizations such as SPIE: The International Society of Optics and Photonics, which produces The Journal of Biomedical Optics. There is the American Society of Genetics with its flagship journal, Genetics.
Other venerable societies such as the American Medical Association publication of JAMA: Journal of the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society’s New England Journal of Medicine and the American College of Physician’s Annals of Internal Medicine.
The TMC Library provides access to over 100 society publications, many of which pertain to specialized areas of medicine, including Hematology (Blood, from the American Society of Hematologists), Radiology (Radiology/ Radiographics, from the Radiological Society of North America), Nursing (American Journal of Nursing) and Tropical Medicine (The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, from the American Society for Tropical Medicine).
The United States has its own version of the Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences, which produces PNAS: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the US of America. Only existing members can nominate new members to this prestigious association, and there is an extensive vetting process candidates must undergo.
There are many professional medical associations that students can join. Students benefit from learning about the professional associations in their fields, as well as reading their scholarly publications. Many associations host conferences and provide networking opportunities for students. Membership is often available to students at a reduced cost, and as a members, they will receive their journal. If you opt not to join, you can still access almost all of these journals through the TMC Library.
