The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to.
Frida Kahlo

Every journey begins with
a single step

Sometimes when we start a journey, the mountain seems overwhelmingly tall. The path is so steep, there are so many skills to learn, it's such a long climb!

It can be daunting. What we often don't take into account is that AS YOU CLIMB you build the skills you need to make the ascent! Once you make that first step you are on your way (and already lapping the people still sitting on their couch!)

When we begin a new piece of art, the vision in our head might be clear, but the techniques needed to create it might be fuzzy. Sometimes we let the fear of failing keep us from starting at all.

Let me tell you a little story.

The work you see above was crystal clear in my head for SIX YEARS! But I had no way to create the fabric I saw in my mind's eye. I had to wait for inkjet printing on fabric to be invented before I could print photos of my ancestors seen in the border and in the faces.

I didn't know how I would finish. But I knew many of the other techniques so I simply started. I drafted patterns. I started painting and stitching the tree and leaves. I started learning photoshop so I could create the collages I needed.

The skills I gained while I was working without a clear path to the finished work helped me find the materials, techniques, and skills I needed to finish. Those skills also helped me expand my work into new, previously unexplored areas.

What is the first step towards
YOUR next dream?
Take it!

"Courage wasn't a matter of taking the whole mountain in a single massive leap. Courage was taking it one step at a time, doing what was necessary now, preparing for the next step, and refusing to worry about whether some step in the future would be the one that would break him."

- Timothy Zahn, 'Star Wars'.

I know you can do this!
