SPORTS & SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

In sports, there are many opportunities for players to develop social-emotional skills like relationship building, self-management, and responsible decision-making. According to this blog, "4 ways to Use Athletics to Promote SEL and Character Development", athletic experiences can be designed specifically to promote SEL and character development.

Read more HERE about the ways to include opportunities for SEL development in athletic experiences.

READ ALOUD: Olympig!

Boomer the Pig has been training hard for the Animal Olympics, so when he loses his first race, he shrugs it off and cheerfully moves on. One event after another, Boomer keeps losing, and the frustration begins to get to him. But even after coming in last in every sport, there's no getting this Olympig down. It's just great practice for the Winter Olympic Games!

Making Connections: Olympics of the Past and Present
The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.

Check out this website to explore some of the ancient Olympic games and traditions and reflect on how we engage with the Olympics today.

Now, let's compare some of the similarities and differences that you find between the modern day Olumpics and the ancient Olympics using this Venn Diagram activity.
