Celebrating School Board Recognition Month (VIDEO)

January is School Board Recognition Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the volunteers working to ensure Washington children have access to a quality public education.

“The school board is critical,” said Superintendent Denny Waters. “They provide the vision and the guidance, understanding what the community wants and needs. It is a tough job. I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who choose to do it.”

Beyond just attending board meetings, district directors serve on committees, attend school and community events and spend time engaging with community members in a variety of ways. “I also try to do a lot of reading and staying up to date on the information that’s coming out, whether it’s in the media or other resources,” said Jackie Maddux, director of district 5 and board vice president. “I think you get back out of it what you put into it.”

Check out this video to learn more about what the board does, and how they're critical to the district's goal of Working Better Together.

Pleasant Valley 6th graders create kindergarten book

Pleasant Valley Middle School 6th graders in Lori Wilson’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) class designed and published an animal alphabet book for some kindergarten students at Pleasant Valley Primary. They also had the chance to read their creation to the kindergarten students earlier this week and send a copy home with them. The project took several months, with students developing a theme and layout, researching the animals, and then working individually and as a group to create illustrations and write descriptions.

Great job, 6th graders!

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on Jan. 10. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.

Prairie High School students start first-ever Her Drive

Some Prairie High School students are working to bring in donations for SHARE Vancouver while raising awareness of a sometimes awkward topic: feminine hygiene.

“I feel like there’s still this stigma attached to periods,” said Melody Brizuela, a junior and president of the school’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter. “Like, you have to sneak a pad to your friend or something.”

Brizuela and fellow junior Malina Pham started Her Drive after seeing the idea on social media. Students are asked to donate tampons, pads, new underwear and new or lightly used bras, plus other toiletries. Tables have been set up during lunch for donations. Students can also sign up for the HOSA-sponsored blood drive on Jan. 28 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“I hope Her Drive helps start a conversation about the struggle a lot of girls have,” Pham said.  “Both with the stigma surrounding women’s reproductive cycles, but also the cost involved with all of the necessary hygiene supplies.”

Prairie High School basketball star named Prep Athlete of the Week

Prairie High School basketball star Hayden Rose was voted The Columbian's Prep Athlete of the Week for week 14, coming from behind to finish 50 votes ahead of second place. The senior forward scored 25 and 34 points in games last week, including a road win over Evergreen High School. Rose becomes the second consecutive Prep Athlete of the Week for Prairie High School after bowler Karley Wold-Hayes ran away with the honor last week. Way to go Falcons!
