CalTeach Summer Research Institute Applications are Open!

Are you looking for a research opportunity for Summer 2022? The CalTeach Summer Research Institute (SRI) is an eight-week program designed to encourage STEM undergraduates from across the UC system to learn about the implementation of research practices in education. Participating students receive a stipend and can use the SRI seminar to fulfill their Research Methods requirement for the CalTeach minor.

Priority Deadline: Feb 1st, 2022
Regular Deadline: March 1st, 2022

This course counts towards:
• The teaching minor for graduate students in EECS.
• A project-oriented course for the Learning Sciences Certificate.
• A disciplinary course for SESAME or Learning Sciences and Human
Development.
• An elective for the undergraduate Minor

COURSE DESCRIPTION
EDUC 224c, Gender, Mathematics, & Science is a project-oriented course that explores contemporary issues in gender equity including stereotype threat, gender identity, implicit bias, spatial reasoning, sexual harassment, Title IX, career trajectories, imposter syndrome, cultural beliefs, video games, inclusive design of instruction and
assessment, single-sex education, self-efficacy, social networking, and historical trends.

The course will address challenges such as gender disparities in enrollment in computer science, Title IX legislation, and glass ceilings. It will address policy issues such as affirmative action, educational standards, workplace safety.

Limited appointment job opportunity  

The Lawrence Hall of Science is hosting online science programs for grades 1-2 and 3-5 from mid-March through mid-May.

Seasoned educators will be leading the two classes and are looking for an assistant teacher who can support the educator, is excited to take over some instruction and help a bit with planning. Participants are mostly from families that are part of the Oakland REACH program, a parent advocacy organization aimed at improving instruction for Black and Brown kids in Oakland schools. Most of the kids are participating in online schooling this year and looking for enrichment experiences.

Required Qualifications for Application

  • 4-6 hours per week of time for planning/delivery 
  • The timing will likely be in the 3-5pm window and occur on two consecutive afternoons. The programs are each six weeks with a week off from April 4-8.
  • bilingual in Spanish and English (this will allow Spanish-speaking parents to participate more easily)
  • have some experience working with elementary grade students
  • have experience engaging learners from communities underrepresented in STEM (especially Black and Latinx students)
  • be passionate about building kids' science identities

This position will pay $16-$17/hour depending on experience.

Girls in Engineering Program Assistant Job

Berkeley’s Girls in Engineering Summer Camp is hiring four program assistants for this summer’s camp.  Apply today!

WHAT IS GiE?: 
Girls in Engineering offers four week-long sessions where middle-school students learn firsthand what it means to be an engineer. Taught by Cal researchers, staff, and students, campers get exposed to the many facets of engineering, design thinking, and real-world problem solving through hands-on activities and projects. 

Details about position: 
Program Assistants work alongside the Director to ensure the smooth execution of camp. Given the uncertainty around what the summer will hold, the camp format may be in person, virtual, or a hybrid format. Program Assistants will need to be flexible and open to support the program in any format. Program Assistants are primarily responsible for assisting the Director with camp operations, supervising campers to ensure their safety, and supporting campers during the learning modules.

More Information about the position 
* Program assistants will help with 3 week-long camps during June and July 2022. In addition, program assistants will help with pre-camp and post-camp work. The start date for this position is June 13, 2022 and the end date is July 29, 2022.
* Camps run during the weeks of June 27, July 11, and July 18. Program assistants must be able to work full time during these four weeks. During the other weeks, candidates will be involved in pre-camp and post-camp work and will be working part-time.

* During the camp weeks, program assistants will be working overtime (approximately 7:45am-5:30pm). It is not possible to combine this position with other day jobs, research internships, or college courses. 

 

Responsibility:

  • serve as camp counselors
  • ensure campers’ safety
  • Must be 18 years or older by May 1, 2022 to apply.
  • assist with camp operations to ensure camp runs smoothly
  • help oversee camper’s behavior and assist workshop leaders as needed
  • monitor campers with food allergies and assist them in choosing food during meals
  • run errands around campus as needed

Residential Tutoring Program Spring 2022  

The Residential Tutor Program is Hiring! 

We are currently accepting new tutor applications for both Spring 2022 AND next academic year 2022-2023. We will accept applications on a rolling basis. The first priority deadline for applications has passed, but the second priority date will be February 28th.

Areas of Tutoring: Chemistry, Physics, Writing, and Math

Required Qualifications for Application

  • Earn A’s and B’s in the subject area in which they’d like to tutor
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (not round up)
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student

Additional Requirements for the job

  • Attend Wednesday staff meetings from 6:30-7:45PM.
  • For Spring Tutors: Attend spring training Jan 18-20 from 6:30-9:30 PM 
  • For Fall Tutors: Attend fall training Aug 15-19, 2022
  • Must be available to work 2- 4 shifts every week. The shifts are from 8PM-10PM Sunday-Thursday.
