"The best thing to do when you are sad," Merlin replied, starting to huff and snort, "is to learn something. It's the one thing that never fails.

You can be aged, with your body shaking and weakened, you can spend sleepless nights listening to the disease that takes your veins, you can lose your only love, you can see the world around you ravaged by evil lunatics, or know that your honor is trampled in the sewers of the vilest minds.

There is only one thing you can do for this: learn. Learn why the world moves, and what moves it. This is the one thing that the mind will never tire of, it will never alienate, it will never be tortured, fearful or intimidated by, nor will it ever dream of regretting it. Learning is the only thing for you.

See how many things there are to learn."*

Turning sadness into learning is the ultimate reframing move.

It's not about the knowledge.

It's not about the tools,

It's all about the curiosity, and the relationship you form with learning. Because in that spark, you stop asking “Am I happy?” and start asking “Am I connected with myself, with what's around me? Is there something I can care for?”

If you can manage the shift, the sadness will take care of itself.

A lot can happen when your imagination is caught on fire

* The Sorcerer's Apprentice is the third and most famous segment in Disney's feature film, Fantasia, and the only returning segment in its sequel, Fantasia 2000. Based on the poem of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the musical piece by Paul Dukas, it stars Mickey Mouse as the titular apprentice.

SIMPLY THE BEST

"By keeping on accepting Parmigiano Reggiano wheels as a guarantee for loans, Credito Emiliano reaffirms its will to give a valuable hand to producers, thus ameliorating, little by little, the whole area’s economic growth. It also crucially highlights the importance of supporting the true 'made in Italy,' often made of families, tradition, collaboration among generations and, central to it all, passion." Credito Emiliano and Parmigiano Reggiano: The Curious Story of the Bank Taking Cheese as Investment Collateral.

+ The ingredients are simple. It's the human work and the aging process that makes Parmigiano Reggiano the king of cheeses.

HIGH ALTITUDE

Airlines could use marketing practices from other industries. "The pandemic has underscored how airline scheduling needs to become more dynamic. [...] In the past, airlines have used historical data to predict future demand, but that’s less helpful given the ups and downs of the industry in the last two years. Vaccari noted that the industry could make more accurate predictions by integrating nontraditional sources of information such as air traveler search and shopping patterns." How Better Airline Technology Could Minimize Flight Disruptions (Undark.)

+ "Companies still owe passengers more than $10 billion in refunds on flights cancelled during 2020."

+ "While the number of touchpoints for a typical airline trip can number 700, flying private can reduce that to just about 30." And "We are seeing people leave commercial flying for the health and safety, but stay for the convenience." Private aviation boomed during the pandemic and the industry is reshaping itself with new business jets to keep up with growing demand (Business Insider.)

TUTTI, EVERYONE

"When it comes to stories of progress, there aren’t many environmental successes to learn from. Although there are some local and national successes – such as the large reductions in local air pollution in rich countries – there are almost none at the global level. Yet there is one exception: the ozone layer. Humanity’s ability to heal the depleted ozone layer is not only our biggest environmental success, it is the most impressive example of international cooperation on any challenge in history. The story behind humanity’s greatest environmental success is too rarely told and too often taken for granted. This is how humanity fixed the ozone layer and why it matters." How we Fixed the Ozone Layer (Works in Progress.)

+ "We can tackle real global problems. We can involve every country in this process. And we can take action quickly when we’re running up against time."

ALIVE ZOOM

Or how to step up the Zoom live experience. "That’s just the right headspace in which to listen to Anderson make her elegantly spaced-out way through such topics as her life in New York, tai chi and meditation, language as a virus, the death of John Lennon, the culture of the internet, Catherine the Great, the combination of sound and image, The Wind in the Willows, non-fungible tokens, and American cheese. Taking advantage of her digital medium, she also plays the violin, explores virtual realms, and dances alongside her younger self." Laurie Anderson Turns Zoom Into an Art Form (Open Culture.)

++ I love the idea of portable philosophy Anderson mentions in her intro video. Sample at least one video. Good for a weekend relaxation.

KNOWING WHAT TO IGNORE

Is just as important as knowing what to focus on. "When you transition from scarcity to abundance, behavior inverts. Tinder is an example. We thought it'd lead to more sex by making it easier to meet people, but the opposite happened. The app made it taboo to hit on strangers in public and people are now having less sex." David Perell on the Inversion of Censorship.

+ "Our filter has ten holes in it. Hans Rosling named them in Factfulness. Fear is the most used among them — the others are gap, negativity, straight line, size, generalization, destiny, single perspective, blame, and urgency." Our Attention Filter has Ten Instinct-Shaped Holes in it. Learning What They Are Helps us Deal with Risk.

BETTER BUSINESS PRACTICE

Nearly 11 years ago, I outlined a framework to calculate the costs of building a proprietary community. The conceptual and operational aspects (1, 2, 4, 5, 6) still hold. Good content at number 3 is the opportunity: to differentiate, weave a good narrative, and establish a path to value. But there are some fundamental questions I had missed.

++ I'm now accepting editing and ghost writing work. I'll have more information about that package soon. Meanwhile, see if you're a good fit
