The ABCs of MSD: a learning series from Springfield

26 years ago, the Springfield Centre was founded to improve the scale and sustainability of the impact of development programmes. Adaptive management was just a twinkle in the development sector’s eye in the late 1990s, but learning from experience and doing things differently is in market system development’s DNA.  After reviewing several donor-funded business development services , founding Springfielders were convinced there had to be another way of working that just might have better chances to improve more people’s lives for longer. This purposeful iconoclasm led to new guidance on how to approach development challenges and eventually was codified into the Operational Guide.

Over the last two and half decades since those first reviews, we’ve learned a lot through our work with 121 programmes in 36 countries. And we’ve shared a lot. Through training over 2,000 people in the art of MSD. Good students of adaptive management, we’re still learning ourselves and look forward to continuing to share what we’ve learned this year through new training offers and more regular communications.

Interest in systems approaches to socioeconomic development only continues to grow, with more donors interested in funding systems programmes and more practitioners from diverse sectors translating good practice guidance into the realities of their fields. Enter
“The ABCs of MSD: a learning series".

Every two weeks this year, we’ll publish a new post sharing good practice, examples, or new applications of MSD. 26 years, 26 topics, 26 posts. We look forward to sharing some of that core MSD good practice with folks who are just beginning their MSD journeys or might fancy a refresher, but we won’t stop there. An approach that was borne out practical field experience continues to evolve, and we’ll reflect on some of adaptations to the approach as it tackles new problems or old problems in a new way.
