The pandemic is associated with some increased gender disparities in the labor market. Among adults ages 25 and older who have no education beyond high school, more women have left the labor force than men. Other disparities have stayed the same or even narrowed: The gender pay gap has remained steady, for example, and the difference in the average hours worked by men and women has slightly diminished. Growing shares of older Americans have adopted key technologies over the past decade, and the gap in tech use between the oldest and youngest adults has narrowed. For example, while Americans ages 65 and older remain 35 percentage points less likely than adults under 30 to own a smartphone (61% vs. 96%), that gap has decreased from 53 points in 2012.
