Grants

Australian Government Volunteer Grants Program

Tamar NRM is pleased to announce they have received grant funding from the Australian Government as part of the 2021 Volunteer Grants Program to run a series of community educational workshops. These workshops are aimed to help build knowledge, awareness, and understanding around a range of natural resource-related topics including; weed identification, volunteerism, aboriginal culture, feral animal management, fungi, and fauna. Tamar NRM will organise a series of workshops over the next 12 months, so watch this space for more information.

TasNetworks Tasmanian Futures Sustainable Future Grants Program

Tamar NRM is also pleased to announce we secured funding through the TasNetworks Tasmanian Futures Sustainable Future Grants Program. The funding will be used to facilitate a kanamaluka/ Tamar Estuary, Source to Sea Education Program. The program will focus on facilitating a series of excursions educating the community and local students on the impacts of land use on the catchment with a particular focus on the King Meadows Rivulet.
Besom Heath Eradication Project

Tamar NRM has been successful in obtaining a grant for a three-year project to tackle an invasive weed, Besom Heath, which is growing in a relatively small area of land in the Bridgenorth area. The $67,630 Facilitated Large Grant from the Tasmanian Government's Weed Action Fund will allow Tamar NRM and partners to run a chemical trial on a property at Bridgenorth to find an effective chemical treatment for Besom Heath, and then to plan the treatment and eradication of the weed over the next few years. Support from landowners where the weed is growing will be crucial to the success of this project.

The chemical trial has been started, and will be monitored for the next 18 months to find which chemical or combination of chemicals is most effective in killing Besom Heath. Effected landowners will be offered assistance to develop weed management plans, and to do on-ground works to eliminate the weed.

Completed Projects

Completion of Two Weeds Projects

Last year Tamar NRM was successful with two grant applications to the Tasmanian Government’s Weed Action Fund Small Grants round. The two projects were for 12 months and both have now been completed.

Detection and Eradication of Nassella Weeds (Chilean Needle Grass and Serrated Tussock) in the Tamar Valley

This project was established and run by Tamar NRM’s Weeds Project Coordinator, Kay Bailey. The project involved the monitoring of identified high-risk sites where Nassella weeds were previously reported, and the training of community Nassella monitors and a scent dog called Sugar provided by Scent Dogs Australia.

Development of a Strategic Weed Management Strategy for the Tamar Valley

The objective of this 12-month project was to update the existing Tamar Valley Weed Strategic Plan which had run its course, and provide a new plan to run for the next 5 years. The Plan focusses on 9  key weeds that are considered to be the most harmful to the Tamar Valley. Environmental consultants RMCG were contracted to run the project, which involved extensive community and stakeholder engagement and consultation, including a Public Forum held at the Windsor Centre in Riverside in June 2021.

The views and suggestions from a wide range of stakeholders have been collected and collated and the Plan has been through an extensive writing process.

We are pleased to say that the Plan is in the final stages of editing and should finalized soon. When complete the Plan will be available on the Tamar NRM website.

Other News

Vale David Peach

Like everyone else we were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Launceston Chamber of Commerce Executive Officer David Peach last year. David had become a good friend of Tamar NRM through his pivotal role partnering with us to stage the Tamar Valley Leaders Lunches, through his enthusiasm to help the business community become more engaged in environmental matters, and through his work with us to redevelop our website and IT infrastructure. We found David to be a genuine, honest and friendly person in all the dealings we had with him, and we will miss his calm no-nonsense presence. Condolences to his family.
