Dear friends and partners,

As districts across the country grapple with returning to school amid the Omicron surge, I am proud that LAUSD was able to bolster our safety protocols and leverage existing resources to reopen 100% of schools this week. It was great to welcome students back from winter break and check out a new semester of learning, including a robotics lesson in traffic safety and a fourth grade woodworking class!

Despite the significant challenges of this moment, we were able to meet our goal of keeping kids safely in the classroom with a comprehensive baseline and weekly testing program, an “all hands on deck” approach to fully staffing schools, and the support of our families and dedicated employees. Along with historic education investments in the Governor’s proposed budget, we were grateful for an executive order to help fill staffing shortages in schools.

We were also excited to give our incoming Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, a whirlwind preview of the District today – including a visit to Markham Middle School, where I began my teaching career. We look forward to officially welcoming him to LAUSD and showing him around more of our school communities next month.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this week’s return to school possible amid challenging circumstances. We will continue closely watching health conditions and working to prioritize the safety, learning, and wellbeing of all our kids as this semester unfolds.

Happy New Year!

I was grateful for the chance to welcome students, families, and school staff back for a new semester of in-person learning with my baseline test and Daily Pass! We kicked off the first week of school with visits to Olive Vista MS, Hesby Oaks ES, Bancroft MS, Mark Twain MS, Ocean Charter, Brockton ES, and Brentwood Science Magnet — and ended the week with incoming Supt. Carvalho at Markham MS, where I began my teaching career!
In the Spotlight: Mr. T Puts the "Leader" in Hesby Oaks Leadership Charter
Hesby Oaks Leadership Charter has been lucky to have Movses Tarakhchyan as their own fearless leader since 2015. Known to everyone as simply “Mr. T”, he strives for excellence in all areas of education and is devoted to providing the best possible experience for his students. Mr. T thinks of Hesby Oaks as one big family, and cares deeply about every student, parent, and employee in their school community. That was especially apparent in 2016 when one of Hesby Oaks’ cafeteria servers collapsed during her shift. Mr. T, who used to be a lifeguard and also required the whole school to take a CPR course over the summer, sprang into action. His quick reaction and prior training undoubtedly saved his employee’s life. Even as the world has been upended by a global pandemic, Mr. T has continued to lead the Hesby Oaks community with incredible care and capability.
