Commander’s Log

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

We had a boating vacation for the holiday season. Yes, we took a Caribbean cruise, one that had been postponed several times and which departed before Omicron was everywhere. We had a wonderful and safe time and missed most of the cold, snowy weather.   It’s funny how you can spend all that time on a large ship and remember the highlights as being on a catamaran for a snorkelling excursion!

Well, 2022 is not starting quite as I (and I am sure everyone else) had hoped. Just after finally being able to meet in person, our January Squadron night, January 17, will be virtual. The topic of weather is very timely though, considering the weather extremes that we experienced in 2021.

Our Spring combined Boating 2/3 online course is full and will be starting January 25, 2022. Thank you to Peter Girling for all his time spent organizing this course.   A big thank you to our faithful tutors who continue to give extra personal help to the new boaters taking our courses. Despite not being able to meet in person with the students, our tutors continue to give helpful advice and forge strong bonds.  We are always looking for more people to assist with these courses.   You can work with an experienced tutor to gain confidence, both in your own knowledge as well as in your ability to help others.  Contact  Peter or me if you are curious about our courses.

Maritime Radio will also be offered thanks to the efforts of Peter Bennett. Check the website to see if a course will be virtual or in-person.

Unfortunately, the 2022 Vancouver Boat show is also going virtual again. Though not the same as smelling that new boat smell, you can still see some of the presentations and get the show specials online.

Some good news from Fisheries and Oceans Canada.   Starting this January, all digital volumes will include a new section entitled “Record of Changes” which will list all updates that were incorporated during the current calendar year.  This will keep everything in one place.  For more information, click here:

https://chs-shc.gc.ca/publications/sailingdirections-instructionsnautiques-eng.html

The bad news is that all the Sailing Directions will now be digital – paper copies have gone the way of the Tides & Currents Tables.   Digital access to both the Sailing Directions and Tides & Current tables is via the above link.
With the current uncertainty, we are not sure which events will be online, in-person, or a combination of the two, but check our website:  vpsboat.org or contact anyone on the Bridge for updated information.

I look forward to ‘seeing’ everyone at our next Squadron meeting.

Harald Riffel has been adventuring on our local waters for many decades via power, sail, kayak and back to power. In between the kayak trips, Harald bought a Ranger 26-foot sailboat in 2001 and conducted a solo circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. In the 2010’s, the “big cruises ranging from the Gulf Islands on up to Broughton Archipelago and as far as Bella Bella. In the summer of 2016, Harald joined a group of kayakers on a beach cleanup project on a remote part of the west coast of Vancouver Island where he met Janet, who also embraced the adventure of boating life. In 2017 Janet and Harald embarked with the Willard on a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. The Willard was soon replaced by the Raven Song, a North Pacific 38, in early 2018, on which Janet and Harald spent 5 months cruising to Glacier Bay and back. Each spring to fall season sees them on another adventure. For 2021, besides exploring the Gulf Islands, they embarked on another circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. Join them on Monday February 21 to hear about the planning, execution and all the thrills of circumnavigation Vancouver Island!

It promises to be a very interesting evening.    Make sure you put Monday February 21at 7.30 p.m. in your diary and join us either in person or via the GoToMeeting link below:

Tales From the Sea

On my recent Hawaiian holiday, I was in need of a good book, so I popped into "Maui Friends of the Library" Used Book store and poked around.  I was hankering for a good sailing story (since I was on an island), and I wound up with a first edition of "Family At Sea", by a John Caldwell (it was $5). In it, John relates the unbelievable story of taking his entire young family - 16 month old, another infant and pregnant wife on a 36 foot ketch from California to the South Pacific armed with only some charts, a compass and a sextant.

It  was written in 1956: before plastic, the Pacific Garbage Dump, modern electronic navigation, satellite phones, social media, and Covid.  Now, this is Caldwell's second book, and I was so gobsmacked reading it that I googled the guy.  And I discovered that he had written an even earlier book, "Desperate Voyage", which was even crazier (I'm trying to track it down).  The review, by legendary sailor and author Charles Doane, of "Desperate Voyage (below), is so entertaining I can't wait to actually read the first book. But I recommend both, for a throwback to the (earlier) days of sailing. Enjoy the review:

Do you have any Stories?
...that you'd like to share?

If you feel the urge to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as the case may be), and have a story you'd like to share with fellow members, we'd like to read it!

Funny stories, lesson-learned stories, great cruising stories, you-won't-believe-what-happened stories...

Please send any short masterpieces to
pro@vpsboat.org and we'll try to include them in the Masthead when we have space.

Happy writing... and boating!

Membership Renewal

A reminder to members to renew your membership!

In order to renew, you must log into the cps-ecp website.  If you have forgotten your password, you can create a new one.  If you no longer use the email with which you made your profile, you will need to contact Moe to forward to National.  For security reasons, only the member can change their email.   If you forgot or ‘gave up’ last year when trying to renew your membership on the new system, you will not be penalized.   Just pay and renew for 2022 and you will be ‘good to go’ for the year.   Another note, the system is very fussy, and every box must be filled in order for you to proceed.   I know that, for some members, renewing has been a frustrating experience, but it is getting easier all the time as the various glitches are being found and worked out.

Remember that the ‘head of the household’ renews for the entire household.   Lifetime members must still renew at 0.00.     Any questions?    Any problems?  Ask our membership officer, Moe Forrestal  smo-vancouver@cps-ecp.org
